Kawaihae Canoe Club luau slated Saturday
Kawaihae Canoe Club’s 18th annual luau is planned from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the club’s Kawaihae Small Boat Harbor location. Tickets may be purchased from members and cost $40 for adults with general seating; $50 for adults with reserve seating; and $15 for children 4 to 10. Child tickets will be sold at the door.
The menu includes Hawaiian food, pupu and plate dinner, water and juice. Personal coolers are welcome. Entertainment will include hula and Hawaiian music.

DAR meets Saturday morning in Hilo
The Daughters of the American Revolution Hawaii Loa chapter meets Saturday at Christ Lutheran Church in Hilo. The event starts with a 10 a.m. social time, followed by the formal meeting at 10:30 a.m.
Garlyn Warren, professor emeritus at the University of Alaska, Anchorage, will speak about the work of the Navajo Code Talkers during World War II.

Ka‘u coastal cleanup planned Saturday
The Hawaii Wildlife Fund will host a Ka‘u coastal cleanup event beginning at 7:45 a.m. Saturday at Pohakuloa Cove, south of Green Sands.
Volunteers should meet at Waiohinu Park to carpool and caravan to the cleanup site. Four-wheel drive vehicles with high clearance are needed to access the site. For a ride or to offer a seat, contact Megan at 769-7629 or kahakai.cleanups@gmail.com.
Participants should bring a bagged lunch, snacks, refillable water bottle, sturdy footwear, and sun and wind protection. Volunteers may bring their own bucket. Swimsuits are optional.
The Hawaii Wildlife Fund will provide gloves, water, a toilet and trash bags, as well as some buckets to haul debris. Participants will be back at the park by 3:30 p.m.
Cruise Night scheduled for Saturday
Lanihau Center’s monthly Cruise Night for classic and custom cars, trucks and motorcycles will be presented from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot fronting Palani Road. The free event is open to owners of unique vehicles who wish to show off their rides and socialize with other owners and spectators.
At 7:30 p.m., participants line up for a slow, noisy cruise around the parking lot. G. Cruz from KWXX will play classic rock ’n’ roll music and emcee the event.
November’s featured nonprofit is the Hawaii Island Food Basket. Representatives will collect nonperishable food items and cash donations. Those who donate will be entered in prize giveaways for items provided by center merchants held every half hour between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m.
