KANEOHE, Oahu — An attorney for former Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan on Tuesday pleaded not guilty on behalf of the former star accused of driving under the influence of alcohol.
District Court Judge Dean Ochiai in Kaneohe set a trial for Jan. 2 for Brennan. Brennan, who was third in voting for the Heisman Trophy in 2007, did not attend the brief hearing.
Brennan was arrested in Kailua, Oahu, in July. Police said in their report that Brennan had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.17 percent. Police said they also found a plastic bag with cocaine residue in the rented car Brennan was driving, but prosecutors decided against drug charges, saying they couldn’t fully prove the drugs belonged to Brennan.
Attorney Maria Carmichael entered the plea for Brennan on behalf of his main attorney, Michael Green.
Brennan set 31 NCAA records during his three years at Hawaii. He threw 58 touchdown passes in 2006 and averaged 387.9 yards per game for his career.
The Washington Redskins picked Brennan with a sixth-round draft pick in 2008, but he never played a regular season game in two seasons. He spent 2009 on injured reserve, then he had knee surgery.
He was cut by the Canadian Football League’s Saskatchewan Roughriders in June, the month before his arrest.
When Brennan was arrested, Green said the quarterback felt like he was disappointing people with his fledgling football career. He also said Brennan was still dealing with emotional and physical pain from a head-on crash on the Big Island in 2010.
In that incident, Brennan was riding in an SUV driven by his then-girlfriend when they crashed into another car.
Hawaii tops Houston Baptist, wins Rainbow Classic
HONOLULU — Vander Joaquim scored 20 points and Hawaii cruised to the title of the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Rainbow Classic with a 73-60 victory over Houston Baptist late Monday night.
Brandon Spearman added 15 points, and Christian Standhardinger had 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Rainbow Warriors (3-0).
Hawaii led 38-23 at the half and outrebounded Houston Baptist 41-34. Art Bernardi had 22 points and eight rebounds for the Huskies (2-1), and Tyler Russell added 16 points.
