Kahakai hoolaulea slated Saturday
Kahakai Elementary School will hold its second annual hoolaulea from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the school. The event includes a silent auction, games, food, craft fair and photos with Santa. The hoolaulea is a fundraiser for all grades.

UH admissions presentation Thursday
University of Hawaii at Manoa Director of Admissions Jan Taniguchi will present information about the university’s admissions, programs, housing, athletics and costs beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Kealakehe High School library.
The presentation is free and open to all parents and students.
HPA holds middle school spelling bee
Forty-six students participated in the Hawaii Preparatory Academy spelling bee. Eighth-grader Alicia Chow won, while sixth-grader Kealia Haitsuka placed second.
Chow and Haitsuka will compete at the Hawaii Island District Spelling Bee slated for Jan. 19 at the academy’s Gates Performing Arts Center in Waimea. The district winner will represent Hawaii Island at the state competition.
Parker debaters victorious at tournament
The Parker School debate team won the trophy for the highest number of wins, 61, at the Kahuku High School Non-Qualifying Debate Tournament Oct. 27. Fifteen schools participated. Punahou took second place, while Damien Memorial High School won for the highest win percentage.
Parker’s top finishers included freshman Kevin Grace, 6-0 in novice Lincoln-Douglas debate; junior Lysha Matsunobu, 5-1 in championship Lincoln-Douglas; sophomore Nya Phillips, junior Kyley Nishimura, sophomore Max Elster and junior Marlon Lumper, all 4-2 in beginning public forum debate; freshman Maia Tarnas and junior Darnee Brighter, both 4-2 in advanced public forum debate; freshmen Sivan Najita and Carrie Hiller, both 4-2 in novice Lincoln-Douglas; junior Marie Jobes and senior Tyler McCullough, both 4-2 in championship Lincoln-Douglas; and eighth-grader Kyra Matsuda and junior Larissa Bolstad-Urquhart, both 4-2 in junior varsity policy debate.
The team will compete Saturday at the University Laboratory School on Oahu.
Hawaii Preparatory Academy’s Ka Makani Players will present Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “The Sound of Music” at the Gates Performing Arts Center. Show times are 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are available at the door: $10 for adults and $5 for students.
“The Sound of Music,” based on the true story of the Von Trapp Family in 1938 Austria, includes classics such as the title song, “My Favorite Things,” “Doe a Deer” and “So Long Farewell.”
HPA theater instructor Marina Tichotsky is the director, music director and costume designer. Jared Terpak is technical director and set and lighting designer.
The cast features Angie Shumov as Maria and Duncan Michael as Captain Von Trapp. The Von Trapp children are played by Kimi Cantyne, Churchill Crean, Nani Welch-Keliihoomalu, DJ Sekiya, Eliana Kaplan, Maiah Police and Melia Becker. More than 40 other HPA students play supporting roles, with an additional 20 students in the orchestra and assisting with production.

Mainland students seek information about Hawaii
West Hawaii Today regularly receives inquiries and requests from elementary school children from other states seeking information about Hawaii, soliciting postcards, maps and other information for a school project. Typically their requests are about landforms, landmarks and famous people.
