New farmers market opens Wednesday
Queen Emma’s Market, a farmers and craft market with food vendors, will open Wednesday and return from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesdays thereafter, on the grounds of Christ Church Episcopal in Kealakekua. The market will be held in the green space fronting Highway 11, near the intersection with Konawaena Road.

IRS warns: Beware of Sandy scams
Following major disasters, it’s common for scam artists to impersonate charities to get money or private information from well-intentioned taxpayers. Such fraudulent schemes may involve contact by telephone, social media, email or in-person solicitations.
The Internal Revenue Service cautions people wishing to make disaster-related charitable donations to avoid scam artists by following these tips:
c Donate to recognized charities.
c Be wary of charities with names that are similar to familiar or nationally known organizations. Find legitimate, qualified charities to which donations may be tax deductible at irs.gov. Use search feature, Exempt Organizations Select Check. Legitimate charities are also listed at fema.gov.
c Don’t give out personal financial information — such as Social Security numbers or credit card and bank account numbers and passwords — to anyone who solicits a contribution from you.
c Don’t give or send cash. Contribute by check or credit card or another way that provides documentation.
Taxpayers suspecting disaster-related frauds should visit irs.gov and search for keywords “Report Phishing.”

Christmas at Hulihee slated Dec. 1
The third annual Christmas at Hulihee Palace is set for Dec. 1; gates open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $100 per person and limited special reserved tables are available.
The event features a royal holiday dinner in honor of Queen Emma, the wife of Kamehameha IV who founded Queen’s Hospital and St. Andrew’s Priory and entertained guests at Hulihee Palace. The program also includes a live and silent auction, as well as entertainment provided by the Kealakehe Intermediate School Chorus and Ukulele Ensemble and Na Hoku Hanohano Award winner Hookena.
Proceeds benefit Habitat for Humanity, West Hawaii and ongoing restoration and preservation efforts at the palace.

KHS book presentation, meeting set for Thursday
The Kona Historical Society will hold a membership meeting followed by a presentation of David Forbes’ “Engraved at Lahainaluna” from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Christ Church Community Center in Kealakekua. Nonmembers are welcome to attend.
Between 1834 and 1844, a collection of copperplate engravings was issued by the Lahainaluna Seminary, a Hawaiian Mission school on Maui. These engravings — views of the Hawaiian Islands, including towns and rural settlements, portraits and maps — form visual records of 19th-century Hawaii. Forbes’ book is the first study of the entire body of engraved work and includes biographical information on the engravers.
Executive Director Thomas Woods of the Hawaiian Mission Houses will give the presentation with special emphasis on Big Island engravings. Copies of the book will be available for purchase. Refreshments will be served; potluck pupu are welcome.
