Conference for landscapers is Nov. 17
The Hawaii Island Landscape Association and the University of Hawaii at Manoa Cooperative Extension Service will host the third annual Landscape Management Conference and Trade Show on Nov. 17 at Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel. Mauna Kea Resort Services joins the association and UH as a conference sponsor this year.
This one-day educational event will focus on providing practical management tools for professional landscape gardeners. The conference is also open to property managers and the public.
With two tracks of educational sessions, attendees can choose individual classes in tree care, turf and ornamental plant management. The speaker lineup features local experts from the golf course, nursery and landscape industry, as well as UH.
Tree care topics include modern safety techniques for all tree workers and climbers. Attendees can also learn how water quality affects every facet of turf management.
Integrated pest management topics include identification and control of new insect pests in Hawaii, web-based resources for weed ID and control, and control recommendations for problem weeds in turf and ornamentals.
Topics related to soil and water include concepts in soil fertility, managing soils for a healthy and productive landscape, effect of soil-water-plant relationships on plant health and irrigation controllers and irrigation programming for the future.
Continuing education units will be available for landscape industry certified technician, pesticide applicators and certified arborists.
The trade show is expanding this year to include ornamental plant material offered by local nurseries, including Hawaiian Sunshine Nursery, Kalaoa Gardens, Kalapana Tropicals, Mountain Meadows, Hawaiian Gardens and Quindembo Bamboo Nursery.
The show also features products and services offered to Big Island landscapers and home gardeners from vendors such as Hawaii Grower Products, Kona Irrigation, Beachside Lighting, Aloha Light and Design, Down to Earth Distributors, Crop Production Services, Farm and Garden, Kona Coqui Specialists, E-Scape Enterprises, Hawaiian Earth Products, Garden Inspirations and B. Hayman Co.
