Police arrested 28 drivers for suspected drunken driving between Oct. 29 and Sunday; four were involved in traffic accidents and two were under the age of 21.

Police arrested 28 drivers for suspected drunken driving between Oct. 29 and Sunday; four were involved in traffic accidents and two were under the age of 21.

Police have made 1,234 suspected DUI arrests this year compared with 1,245 during the same period in 2011, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

Kona officers arrested 12 motorists and Hilo officers arrested 11 drivers while Puna officers arrested three motorists. Hamakua and South Kohala arrested one in each district.

There have been 1,230 major accidents this year compared with 1,165 during the same period last year.

To date, there have been 36 traffic fatalities on Big Island public roadways, compared with 18 fatalities during the same period in 2011, according to police. To date, nine of those fatalities were related to drugs, four to alcohol and 10 were a combination of both.
