Hawaii Volcanoes National Park offers the following free programs (park entrance fees may apply):

Terry Hunt will discuss “The Statues That Walked: Unraveling the Mystery of Easter Island,” a book he co-authored with fellow archaeologist Carl Lipo, at 7 p.m. Nov. 13 at the Kilauea Visitor Center. Easter Island is generally considered a case study of human-induced environmental catastrophe resulting in cultural collapse. However, a closer look at the archaeological and historical record reveals that while an environmental disaster unfolded, the ancient Polynesians persisted. Hunt outlines the evidence for the island’s prehistoric success and explores how and why this culture avoided collapse.

The Kalapana Awa Band will perform at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 21 at the Kilauea Visitor Center. The doors will open at 6:15 p.m.

Jadelyn Moniz-Nakamura will examine geologic evidence of prehistoric activity in the Ka‘u Desert in her “Whose Footprints Are These Really?” presentation beginning at 7 p.m. Nov. 27 in the Kilauea Visitor Center. Footprints found in desert ash layers were believed to have been created in 1790 by the army of the Hawaiian Chief Keoua. However, research suggests the story behind the fossilized footprints may be more complex than originally thought.
