Japan tops Hawaii in Asia Pacific Junior Cup

Behind eight victories in individual match play, Japan pulled away to beat Hawaii 19-13 and win the Asia Pacific Junior Cup Saturday at the Waikoloa Beach Resort’s Kings’ Course.

Japan, which led 9 1/2 to 6 1/2 entering the final day of the three-day event, also halved two individual matches on Saturday. In one of them, Waiakea senior Ciera Min earned a half-point for Hawaii in her match against Japan’s Rina Hasegawa.

Two other Big Islanders in the tournament dropped their individual matches, with Japan’s Akiho Sato beating Waiakea junior Andi Igawa 4 and 3 and Hawaii Prep senior Andrew Paisley falling to Japan’s Naoya Kaneko 2 and 1.
