Free Thanksgiving craft class for children set
The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation in Kona is taking registration for a free Thanksgiving craft class. Participants will paint and personalize a ceramic turkey.
The activity is open to children ages 8 to 14. The class will be from 4 to 5 p.m. Nov. 13 at Kekuaokalani Gym in Kailua-Kona. Class size is limited.

Food vulnerability, safety course slated
The University of Hawaii, Hawaii Department of Health, Food Safety Education Program, Local and Immigrant Farmer Education and Risk Management Hawaii programs will host a Food Vulnerability Assessment Training Course from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 15 and from 8 a.m. to noon Nov. 16 at the Kona Cooperative Extension Service conference room.
The course is designed for food producers and processors and is intended to prevent and deter terrorist acts targeting the food sectors by teaching communities to assess vulnerabilities and implement mitigation strategies to harden vulnerable targets.

Senior ID cards
issued in November
The Coordinated Services for the Elderly Program of the Hawaii County Elderly Activities Division will issue senior ID cards for people 60 years and older from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at the Kohala CSE Courthouse.
Staff will also issue cards from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Kmart, Kailua-Kona; 9 to 11 a.m. Nov. 13 at L. Yoshimatsu Senior Center, Waimea; 9 to 11 a.m. Nov. 19 at St. Jude’s Church, Hawaiian Ocean View Estates; 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 28 at the West Hawaii Civic Center gazebo; and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 30 at Yano Hall, Captain Cook.

meet Monday
The Hawaii Handweavers Hui Big Island chapter will host Monday Weavers from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at Island Yarn and Art Supplies, 73-5568 Olowalu St. The public is invited to join members of the hui to discuss all aspects of weaving at this free session.

Words and Wine event scheduled for Tuesday
Kona Stories’ November Words and Wine event begins with an informal meet-and-greet with authors Tom Peek, Nancy Bo Flood and Jeremy Vaeni at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Peek’s “Daughters of Fire” picks up where James Michener’s “Hawaii” left off. Peek’s novel, which took more than a decade to research and write, explores Hawaii’s tensions and cultural revival and illuminates the spirit of a native people struggling to keep faith and aloha.
Flood’s latest book, “The Navajo Year, Walk Through Many Seasons,” provides poetic descriptions of the many sights, sounds and activities associated with each month of the Navajo calendar.
Vaeni is a columnist for UFO Magazine and author of “I Know Why The Aliens Don’t Land!” Vaeni’s “Urgency” details insights on the human condition he realized when a spiritual energy awakened in him a decade ago.
The event includes presentations from each author and concludes around 9 p.m. after a question-and-answer session.

Senior yoga classes offered at two sites
Elderly Recreation Services offers November yoga classes for anyone aged 55 and older. Senior yoga is a series of stretches and breathing techniques that relax the body and mind and help reduce stress.
Classes begin at 8:30 a.m. every Tuesday at Yano Hall. Monday and Friday classes begin at 8:30 a.m. at Hale Halawai. A month of classes costs $10; registration and payment can be made at the first session.

Ching offers dance starter kits, coffee
Carolan Ching of Dance Hawaii Ballroom Club will host a free coffee service during the holidays from 7 to 9 p.m. at Alii Fitness Boutique in Keauhou Shopping Center. Coffee, tea and water will be available along with information about the shops. Dance movies will be shown.
Ching will also introduce her free dance starter kits, which are available for a limited time.
