A 30-year-old Honaunau woman police believe was sitting on Mamalahoa Highway died Tuesday after being struck by a sedan north of Honaunau Elementary School in South Kona.
The woman has been identified as Jasmin K. Robertson, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
The woman had apparently been sitting on the northbound lane of the highway, near mile marker 107, when she was struck by a northbound 2003 BMW two-door sedan driven by a 50-year-old Captain Cook man, according to police who responded to the 6:38 p.m. report. Robertson, according to police, appeared intoxicated.
Hawaii Fire Department rescue personnel took the woman to Kona Community Hospital, where she died at 7:15 p.m.
Captain Cook Fire Station Capt. Sam Lee said the woman was found lying near the mauka side of the roadway unconscious, not breathing and without a pulse. Rescue personnel immediately initiated CPR and other life-saving measures.
The driver of the vehicle was wearing seat belt and was not injured, according to police.
It is unknown at this time if speed, alcohol or drugs were involved on the part of the driver, however, police say the woman had been drinking.
Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a negligent homicide investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

This is the 36th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with 18 at the same time last year.
