Election art, essay contests planned
The Hawaii County Elections Division is holding art and essay contests to encourage students and educators to learn about and get interested in elections.
The art contest to design the voting machine of the future is open to children ages 8 to 10. Art in any format, including drawings, paintings or sculpture, may be submitted.
The essay contest is open to children ages 11 to 13. In 800 words or less, entrants must write about what they would accomplish if they were elected to a two-year term to the Hawaii County Council on Tuesday.
The deadline to enter either contest is 4:30 p.m. Monday. Winners will be announced Nov. 11. Essays may be emailed to jbennett@co.hawaii.hi.us. Art and essays may be taken to legislative branch offices in Hilo, Waimea, Kona and Pahoa.
All submissions must be submitted with the name and age of the participant and the parent or legal guardian’s name, mailing address, email address and telephone number.

Robotics competition slated for Saturday
West Hawaii robotics teams will compete in the Hawaii FIRST LEGO League HELCO West Hawaii District Tournament Saturday at Kahakai Elementary School.
Teams include Kahakai, Holualoa and Kohala Elementary and Konawaena Middle schools. The event also includes a Junior FIRST LEGO League exposition with teams from Kahakai, Holualoa and Hookena Elementary.
The league introduces young people to science and technology while building self-confidence, knowledge and life skills. IT challenges them to think like scientists and engineers. Alongside adult mentors, teams solve problems using engineering concepts, presentation techniques and robots.
This year’s challenge theme is “Senior Solutions.” Teams were tasked with finding ways to improve the quality of life for senior citizens: helping them be independent, engaged and connected in their communities.
A Junior FIRST LEGO League Expo is planned from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the school cafeteria. The opening ceremony is at 11:30, followed by robot game matches at noon. The Kealakehe High School Robotics Team will hold a demonstration, then the event concludes with awards and closing at 2:30 p.m.

HPA students trick-or-treat for UNICEF
Hawaii Preparatory Academy students in kindergarten through eighth grade will participate in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF. The Lower School Student Council, under the direction of counselor Mariah Dodd, is coordinating the project.
“As part of the service learning component here at HPA, the students have learned how even just small amounts of money can be so helpful for many causes, including children in need,” said Dodd. “The children are encouraged to begin saving their own pennies. They also are hopeful that the friends and neighbors they visit during Halloween evening will be generous in sharing whatever they can.”
UNICEF provides immunizations, education, health care and clean water to children in 156 countries and territories.

College Mechanics workshop offered
A free College Mechanics workshop is slated from 9:30 a.m. until noon Saturday at Kanu o ka Aina New Century Public Charter School in Waimea.
High school juniors and seniors who qualify for Running Start courses, adults interested in entering or returning to community college, and students currently enrolled in the college interested in attending the English 100 class in Waimea are invited to attend.
Hawaii Community College staff members will discuss the University of Hawaii Common Application, documents needed to accompany a UH application and the Compass placement test.
Three workshops to assist individuals in preparing for the Compass test will be offered from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 7, 14 and 28 at the Kanu o ka Aina Learning Ohana Community Computer Lab. The test will be offered at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 5 at the same location.
