The Volcano Art Center will offer the following classes and events during November:
c Charlene Asato will lead “Cards can be Circles, Triangles and Squares” from 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 3. The workshop will concentrate on shapes other than rectangles in handmade card making. The cost is $35; $31.50 for center members, plus a $10 supply fee.
c Award-winning author Susan Law Corpany presents “Funny Pen, Writing with Humor” from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 3. There will be a one-hour lunch break at noon. The cost is $50; $45 for center members. Participants should bring paper and pen and dress comfortably in layers.
c A hula hakiko “informance” will be held at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 10. The program will feature kumu Leilehua Yuen and Manu Josiah giving a demonstration of the preparation, protocol and offering of traditional hula and chant at the hula platform located near the Volcano Art Center Gallery. A hands-on cultural demonstration will run from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
c The VAC Members’ Appreciation Holiday Event, for members only, is planned from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Nov. 16 at the gallery in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The event includes a preview of the center’s 13th annual Invitational Wreath Exhibit. Complimentary pupu, cider and champagne will be served. c The Volcano Village Artists Hui 26th annual Art Studio Tour and Sale is slated from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 23 through 25. Visitors are invited to meet the artists in their studios, and see artwork in a wide variety of media. A drawing for pieces contributed by the artists will be held on the last day of the event. c Every Friday is “Aloha Friday” at the center. Hands-on cultural craft workshops are held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the gallery porch in the national park.
c Niaulani Nature Walks are held at 9:30 a.m. Mondays and at 11 a.m. Saturdays in Volcano Village. The one-hour nature walk traverses a lush portion of an old-growth Hawaiian rain forest on a short loop trail.
