Police arrested 47 drivers for suspected drunken driving between Oct. 15 and Sunday; nine were involved in traffic accidents and two were younger than 21.

Police arrested 47 drivers for suspected drunken driving between Oct. 15 and Sunday; nine were involved in traffic accidents and two were younger than 21.

Police have made 1,170 suspected DUI arrests this year compared with 1,189 during the same period in 2011, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

South Hilo officers arrested 27 motorists and Kona officers 12, according to police. Puna officers arrested six motorists and Hamakua officers two.

There have been 1,172 major accidents this year compared with 1,113 during the same period last year.

To date, there have been 35 traffic fatalities on Big Island public roadways, compared with 16 fatalities during the same period in 2011, according to police. Police say eight of those fatalities were related to drugs, four to alcohol and 10 to a combination of alcohol and drugs.
