Intermediate athletics pilot program launched
A new intermediate athletics initiative aimed at increasing learning opportunities for seventh- and eighth-grade students will begin this winter in Ka‘u.
Engaging more students in extra-curricular activities fulfills BOE/DOE’s strategic plan, which sets increasing the percentage of students participating in these activities as a target in its student achievement goals. The pilot program will fill a gap in sports opportunities for public school students at these grade levels.
All intermediate athletes also participate in After-School All-Stars program that provides them with academic support through tutorials and homework assistance and have at least a 2.0 grade point average to participate.
Sports included for this year’s pilot program at Ka‘u include boys and girls basketball, volleyball and soccer.

Waimea Middle School imu tickets available
Waimea Middle School’s eighth-graders will again prepare a Thanksgiving imu, both as part of a cultural learning and sharing tradition and to help underwrite the annual East Coast educational trip.
A $20 per pan donation is requested and families may bring one or several pans to be cooked in the traditional underground oven, which will be managed by students and their family members.
Funds raised go entirely to the student trip to Washington, Philadelphia and New York.
Pans of food may be dropped off between 3 and 5 p.m. Nov. 21 and picked up between 9 and 10 a.m. Nov. 22.
Food must be thawed, seasoned and placed in heavy-duty foil pans, then double-wrapped with heavy-duty foil. It is recommended that clean green ti-leaves or parchment be wrapped around the foods before the foil outer wrapping to keep foods from directly touching the foil.
Tickets must be purchased in advance. Purchase tickets from any East Coast trip student or family member, at the school office or by calling Patti Cook at 937-2833.
Donations of ti leaves and banana stalks are welcome.
The students are also selling tickets for Holy Bakery pies in advance. Tickets are $10 for a freshly baked 8-inch apple, custard or pumpkin pie; $15 per frozen 10-inch apple, peach, pear or coconut pie.
Waimea Middle’s advisory panel meets Monday
Students, families and community members are invited to a meeting of Waimea Middle School’s local advisory panel from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday in classroom K-4.
An update on the school’s accreditation self-study process is on the agenda, as well as a review of the associated proposed vision and beliefs about teaching and learning statement and the expanded learning time proposal.
Recommended revisions to the panel’s charter and bylaws will be discussed.
All meetings are open and time is provided for students, families and other interested persons to speak. The meeting agenda is posted at waimeamiddleschool.org. Dr. Kamana Beamer will chair the meeting.

Kealakehe Elementary hosting book fair
Kealakehe Elementary School’s annual Scholastic Book Fair will be held from 1:15 to 5 p.m. Monday through Nov. 2 in the school library. The community is invited. Books for all readers in the family will be available for purchase.
The book fair raises funds for schoolwide access to online databases and activities that support the Newbery team. For more information, call the library at 327-4308, ext. 237.
