Coffee stroll farmers’ deadline is Monday

The deadline for participation by Kona coffee farms in the 14th annual Holualoa Village Coffee & Art Stroll is Monday.

The 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 3 event will host more than two dozen local coffee companies that offer free samples of their brews from the front lanais of the town’s historic buildings and along the half mile of Mamalahoa Highway from the Ipu Hale Gallery to the Holualoa School.

Farms which have previously participated and have received their applications are urged to mail them in by Monday to reserve their same location as last year. New applicants can call chairman Brian Downes at 443-1228 for an entry form or more information.

Holualoa’s Coffee & Art Stroll, sponsored by The Holualoa Inn and Mountain Thunder Kona Coffee, is the kick-off event for the annual Kona Coffee Cultural Festival that runs through Nov. 11 at locations throughout West Hawaii.

Waimea parade to honor Vietnam vets

The Waimea Twilight Christmas Parade committee invites veterans of the Vietnam War on Hawaii Island to serve as grand marshals in the 52nd annual event which begins at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 1.

“The Christmas parade committee wishes to express the community’s gratitude and thankfulness,” said committee member Kathy Painton. “I hope the cheers from people lining the streets will show these veterans how much the Waimea community truly appreciates the sacrifices they made in service to our country.”

Vietnam War veterans will walk behind flags representing their branch of service. Those unable to walk the parade route will ride in a motorcade. Contact Kathy Painton at 880-9880 or email kathypainton@hotmail.com to participate or for more information.

Rotary offers opportunity to create scholarship programs

The Rotary Club of Kona Mauka has established a memorial scholarship program that allows individuals or businesses a vehicle to create a scholarship tailored to their preferences. The program eliminates the requirement to form a nonprofit corporation, ensures these memorial scholarships will be promoted and vetted to meet the desires of the individual or business and that they meet all legal tax-exempt requirements.

Anyone seeking to establish a scholarship program needs to decide on a name and define the target recipients’ qualifications. Administration will be handled by the club.
