‘Aloha Buddha’ to be shown in N. Hawaii

“Aloha Buddha” will be screened at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hawi Jodo Mission; 9:30 a.m. Sunday at Kamuela Hongwanji; and 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Honokaa People’s Theater.

The film, a documentary about the unique form of Japanese Buddhism practiced in Hawaii, won the Audience Appreciation Award for Best Documentary at the 2011 Hawaii International Film Festival.

Filmmaker and producer Lorraine Minatoishi will be available to talk story at informal receptions following the screenings.

A $5 donation is suggested.

Library hosts book sale on Saturday

The Friends of the Libraries, Kona will hold a book sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday on the Kailua-Kona Public Library lanai. Proceeds will help fund the libraries’ educational and summer reading programs and book purchases.

Spinal healing workshop is Saturday

Qigong instructor Priya Lucas will lead a workshop in the art of spinal self-healing from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village. This workshop will guide students through ancient techniques to stretch and massage the spine to help decompress vertebrae and allow more flexibility.

The cost is $65 or $59 for center members. No previous experience is needed; early registration is recommended.

Quilters to gather Saturday in Kealakekua

The monthly meeting of Aloha Quilters of Kona begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Wallace Hall at Christ Church Episcopal in Kealakekua. The meeting will include a presentation of quilts to Habitat for Humanity families.

The club is composed of quilters working in both traditional and Hawaiian styles. It meets the third Saturday of each month to share ideas and techniques and to promote the art of quilting. New members, novice quilters and “old hands” are welcome.

Healing workshop scheduled for Sunday

The Dragonfly Ranch Healing Arts Center in Honaunau will host a harmonics healing workshop presented by Yumi and Gen Morita from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday. One-on-one consultations follow the workshop.

The event will include demonstrations and practices for participants. Soto therapy, a healing method using heat applications, will be taught along with Sotai Exercise, which uses gentle body movements to improve healing.
