Pena latest to interview for Boston manager’s job
BOSTON — New York Yankees bench coach Tony Pena is the second person to be interviewed as the Red Sox continue to search for Bobby Valentine’s replacement.
The former Red Sox catcher and Kansas City Royals manager was interviewed on Monday, an off day in the AL championship series between the Yankees and the Detroit Tigers.
Los Angeles Dodgers third base coach Tim Wallach met with the Red Sox last Friday. Former Boston bench coach and current Baltimore Orioles third base coach DeMarlo Hale and San Diego Padres special assistant Brad Ausmus are expected to be interviewed this week.
Ozzie Smith to auction Gold Gloves
LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. — Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith is planning to auction his 13 Gold Gloves and a pair of World Series rings he received from the St. Louis Cardinals in retirement.
SCP Auctions said Tuesday that bidding for the online sale will start Nov. 14 and end Dec. 1. SCP said Smith decided on the auction, which also includes 11 All-Star game rings, as part of estate and family planning.
In a separate sale, bidding began Tuesday at Goldin Auctions for Pete Rose’s copy of the 1990 agreement in which he accepted a lifetime ban from baseball following an investigation of his gambling while manager of the Cincinnati Reds.
Braves’ McCann
has surgery for
torn labrum
ATLANTA — Braves catcher Brian McCann could be ready for the first month of the 2013 season after having surgery Tuesday for an injury to his right shoulder that hampered his hitting this season.
The Braves said the surgery, performed by Braves orthopedic surgeon Dr. Xavier Duralde, arthroscopically repaired a tear in McCann’s labrum. The tear was larger than was shown in a MRI.
Penn St. won’t
renew contract of accused AD Curley
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Penn State will not renew the contract of athletic director Tim Curley, who has been on leave since being charged last year with perjury and failing to report a child sex abuse allegation against Jerry Sandusky.
The school notified Curley his contract would not be renewed when it expires in June, university spokesman Dave La Torre said in a statement.
Curley and retired vice president Gary Schultz are scheduled to stand trial in January in Harrisburg on the perjury and failure to report charges. Both men have denied the allegations against them.
Legislation signed
on Seattle arena deal
SEATTLE — King County Executive Dow Constantine and Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn signed legislation Tuesday on the funding plan for construction of an arena that could be used to lure the NBA back to Seattle.
The executives signed the deal a day after a negotiated memorandum of understanding between the city, county and investor Chris Hansen was approved by the city and county councils.
Bettman, NHL make new offer in hope
of full season
TORONTO — The stalled talks between the NHL and the players’ association finally got a jumpstart.
After watching 34 days pass without a new proposal being offered from either side in negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement, Commissioner Gary Bettman made a new offer to the NHLPA that proposes a 50-50 split of hockey-related revenue and a full 82-game season starting Nov. 2.
Defending champ Monfils ousted at Stockholm Open
STOCKHOLM — Patrik Rosenholm of Sweden beat defending champion Gael Monfils 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 Tuesday to advance to the second round of the Swedish Open.
Earlier Tuesday, Lleyton Hewitt advanced by beating Kevin Anderson of South Africa 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus was down 3-1 in the first set but rallied to beat David Goffin of Belgium 6-4, 6-2, and Spain’s Feliciano Lopez hit 26 aces to beat Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu 7-6 (5), 6-7 (4), 6-2.

LUXEMBOURG — Venus Williams cruised through her first match since the U.S. Open, beating 15-year-old WTA rookie Belinda Bencic 6-3, 6-1 Tuesday in the first round of the Luxembourg Open.
Earlier, top-seeded Roberta Vinci of Italy beat Olga Govortsova of Belarus 6-0, 2-6, 6-0 to reach the second round.
