Maunakea Skies
slated for Saturday

Tae-Soo Pyo, a support astronomer at the Subaru Telescope, will present “Jets and Young Stars” at Imiloa Astronomy Center’s Maunakea Skies planetarium program at 7 p.m. Saturday. Pyo will discuss his observations of the launching mechanism of jets from young stellar objects.

Star formation is a mysterious process. Stellar nurseries are shrouded in clouds of gas, making them difficult to study. Using world-class instruments such as the infrared camera and spectrograph at the Subaru Telescope, researchers are learning why some areas within these clouds collapse to form new stars and how young stars sometimes blast out jets of gas back into the clouds.

Imiloa’s Planetarium Manager Shawn Laatsch will host the event and provide observational highlights of the current night sky over Hawaii. The presentation costs $5 for individual, dual, kupuna and family members; $3 for patron members; free for silver, gold and corporate members. The nonmember rate is $8. Purchase tickets at the front desk or by phone at 969-9703.

We’d be thrilled to give it away and keep this volume out of our landfills.”
