Taro tours Thursdays at Greenwell garden
Visitors to the Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden can explore the forests and fields of native and Polynesian introduced plants in the company of a guide at 1 p.m. daily on the Greenwell Garden Guided Hawaiian Plant Walks.
Thursdays, Oct. 18 through Nov. 15, taro specialist Kamuela Naihe will showcase the garden’s more than 70 taro varieties and new huli bank plantings during these guided walks. Naihe will describe the cultivation and care techniques for taro at the garden while visitors observe the plants in different stages of maturity.
The garden is expanding its taro plantings and adding new beds to increase the numbers of rare and desirable Hawaiian varieties after receiving a grant from the Ceres Trust and E kupaku kaaina – The Hawaii Land Restoration Institute.
The garden is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Admission is $7; reduced fees are available for seniors, kamaaina, military and children. For more information, call 323-3318 or visit bishopmuseum.org/greenwell.
Historical society’s coffee farm plans open house
In celebration of its 13th year, Kona Historical Society’s Kona Coffee Living History Farm will hold an open house honoring Kona’s coffee heritage from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
This free event includes coffee tastings, a traditional food booth and tours of the site.
A variety of demonstration classes are also planned, including lessons in traditional coffee processing, calligraphy and coffee basket and doll making.
Activities for children include coffee bag races, ojame games and pictures with Charlie the Donkey.
AdvoCats meeting Saturday morning
The public is invited to attend an AdvoCats meeting set for 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Kona United Methodist Church on Palani Road.
AdvoCats is a nonprofit “trap-neuter-release” organization committed to solving the homeless cat problem in a humane way. The next clinic is slated for Nov. 7 in Kailua-Kona.

Macdonald teaching crochet, knitting classes
Stephanie Macdonald will teach basic and intermediate classes Saturday and Oct. 27 at Island Yarn and Art Supplies. The first class is for beginner crocheters and teaches a basic, yet fashionable beanie. The second class teaches intermediate knitters how to create a pair of socks using multiple colors of yarn.
The crochet class is set from 10 a.m. to noon and the knitting class follows from 1 to 3 p.m. at the store, 73-5568 Olowalu St., Kailua-Kona. The cost is $25 per session plus materials.
