Hawaii Nei competition accepting entries Oct. 26
The 2012 Hawaii Nei juried art exhibition opens Nov. 2 and runs through Nov. 29 at the Wailoa Arts and Cultural Center in Hilo. All resident artists of Hawaii Island are encouraged to submit works of art celebrating the island’s native plants and animals. The contest will include divisions for school-age youth with waived entry fees. All media are welcome. Submit artwork, with a completed entry form, between noon and 7 p.m. Oct. 26 at the center. Judging will occur the next day.
A first-come, first-served framing opportunity and entry form submission period is offered to young artists Oct. 22 through 25, during normal office hours at the center to promote youth participation in the exhibition and help share the burden of framing. The center will provide the frames as borrowed for the exhibit and assist young artists in framing their art. Supplies and sizes are limited; reservations should be made with Codie King at 933-0416 to schedule a time.
A keiki awards ceremony is planned from 4 to 5 p.m. Nov. 2. The event will include refreshments, prizes and entertainment featuring music and puppets from Dina Kageler. The formal opening featuring artwork of professional and amateur artists follows the youth opening ceremony.

Volcano Art Center lists October events
The Volcano Art Center will offer the following events and classes in October:
c “Hula Arts at Kilauea,” featuring a hula kahiko “informance” with kumu Leilehua Yuen and Manu Josiah and including a narrated demonstration of the presentation, protocol and offering of traditional hula and chant, will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday on the hula platform near the center’s gallery. A hands-on cultural demonstration will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the gallery, as well.
c “Piano Hinge, Unhinged” is a workshop led by Charlene Asato from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 20. Asato will dispel the “mysteries of the piano hinge” in bookbinding. Participants will explore the possibilities of “sculpturally” and texturally rich books. The cost is $35; $31.50 for center members, plus a $10 supply fee. Call 967-8222 to reserve a space.
c “Dances of Universal Peace,” facilitated by Lila Flood, is planned from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Oct. 21 at the center’s Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village. The spiritual practice, incorporating folk-dance-like steps and sacred mantras from major spiritual and religious traditions, blends chant, music and movement into an experience of unity, peace and possibility. c Niaulani nature walks, one-hour long guided rain forest tours, begin at 9:30 a.m. Mondays and 11 a.m. Saturdays at the Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village. The tours are free, but donations are welcome.
c Every Friday is Aloha Friday at the gallery in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Hands-on cultural craft lessons are offered from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Arts of Kona presents Young Artist Showcase Oct. 20
Arts of Kona will present its fourth annual Young Artist Showcase from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 20 in the ballroom at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.
The show, which is free and open to the public, provides young artists with an opportunity to exhibit their talents in performance and visual arts. It is not a competitive event.
Arts of Kona’s goal is to create a gathering place in the community, to share and experience excellence in the arts.

WCT announces ‘The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie’ cast
Waimea Community Theatre has announced the cast for its production of “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie,” directed by Jack Watson.
Anjalisa Aitken is Jean Brodie; Melora Purell is Helena; Isabela Green is Jenny; Todd Ednie is Lloyd; Rick Turnbow is Lowther; Mari-jo Allen is Mackay; Haley Hubbard is Mary; Linda Evans is Miss Campbell; Emily Dahl is Monica; John Sucke is Perry; Madyson Harper is Sandy; and Erica Yost, Isabel Richter and Sadie Ednie are the young girls.
“The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” is a stage play by Jay Presson Allen based on the novel by Muriel Spark. Brodie is a formidable and charismatic school teacher who goes beyond the curriculum to teach four young girls her own view of life, said Watson. This leads to awkward situations and difficult decision making.
Performances will be Nov. 16 to 18 and 23 to 25 at the Parker School Theatre in Waimea. Friday and Saturday shows begin at 7:30 p.m. Sunday matinees begin at 3 p.m.
Ticket sales will begin two weeks before opening night and will be sold by cast and crew, as well as at the Waimea General Store and Without Boundaries in Waimea and Suite Possibilities in Kailua-Kona. Tickets will also be sold at the door.
