The Hawaii Fire Department has nearly contained a brush fire that broke out Friday and burned about 8 acres makai of Hualalai Elderly Housing in Kailua-Kona.

The fire, which broke out around noon in vacant land north of Kamaaina Hale, was listed as under control and about 90 percent contained this afternoon, said Hawaii Fire Department West Hawaii Battalion Chief Reuben Chun. A bulldozer is finishing the perimeter.

Firefighters will remain on scene throughout the night dousing any hot spots and flare-ups, Chun said. If all goes well, the fire should be declared out on Sunday.

Hualalai Road remains open. Motorists are advised to use caution when driving in the area because firefighters and equipment are working.
