has left shoulder surgery
LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles Dodgers slugger Matt Kemp had surgery on his left shoulder on Friday and should be ready for opening day.
During the 60-minute procedure at the Kerlan-Jobe Clinic in Los Angeles, Dr. Neal ElAttrache repaired a tear of the labrum in Kemp’s shoulder and some minor damage to the rotator cuff, the team said.
Kemp will begin physical therapy in a week to 10 days and is expected to start swinging a bat in early January. The Dodgers open the season April 1 against San Francisco.
Red Sox eye Farrell
for vacant manager’s job
BOSTON — John Farrell sat in the visitors’ dugout at Fenway Park as talk intensified that he might be working in the other dugout next year.
The Toronto manager looked up at two dozen reporters a month ago and told them that as Boston’s pitching coach for four years under Terry Francona he learned an important lesson: think of the players first in making managerial decisions.
Since that session before the opener of the Blue Jays’ three-game sweep of the Red Sox, Bobby Valentine has been fired as Boston’s manager and Farrell has emerged as the leading candidate to take over. But he has a year left on his contract, and the Red Sox would have to discuss compensation with the Blue Jays to make him available.
Rams coach Fisher
mum on Amendola’s injury
ST. LOUIS — St. Louis Rams coach Jeff Fisher had little to say about the condition of Danny Amendola, calling it a “competitive issue” after the receiver was injured during Thursday night’s win over Arizona.
Fisher said he’d have an injury report Wednesday regarding Amendola, who could miss the Oct. 14 game at Miami.
Ex-NFL player Larry Johnson arrested in Vegas
LAS VEGAS — Former NFL running back Larry Johnson was arrested early Friday at a Las Vegas Strip resort after an ex-girlfriend told police he choked her into unconsciousness and left her in her underwear in a hotel hallway.
Larry Alphonso Johnson Jr., 32, was being held on $15,000 bail at the Clark County jail pending an initial court appearance on a domestic violence-strangulation charge that could get him a minimum of two years in state prison if he is convicted.
DJ Williams suspended
for 3 more games
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos will be without linebacker D.J. Williams until mid-November after the NFL added three games to his suspension Friday.
Williams was punished for violating the league’s substance abuse policy following his conviction in August of driving while ability impaired.
He already was serving a six-game suspension to start the season for violating the league’s banned-substances policy — such as performance enhancing drugs — after the NFL said he supplied a “nonhuman” urine sample during a drug test.
Angels, Iannetta agree
to $15.55M, 3-year deal
ANAHEIM, Calif. — Chris Iannetta and the Los Angeles Angels agreed Friday to a $15.55 million, three-year contract, a deal that keeps the catcher from becoming a free agent.
The Angels announced the deal two days after they missed the playoffs for the third straight year.
Jill Ellis interim
coach of US women
CHICAGO — Jill Ellis will coach the U.S. women’s soccer team in its next two matches while a successor is found for Pia Sundhage.
After leading the U.S. to its second straight Olympic gold medal since taking over, Sundhage stepped down Sept. 1 to return to her native Sweden. She has since been hired as coach of the Swedish women’s national team.
Ellis, a former assistant to Sundhage, became development director for the U.S. women’s national teams in January 2011. She is not a candidate to replace Sundhage.
NHL, players’ association meet in Toronto
TORONTO — The NHL and the players’ association quietly resumed collective bargaining talks Friday and expect to be in contact again in the upcoming days.
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly met with union head Donald Fehr and special counsel Steve Fehr in the NHLPA office on the 20th day of the NHL lockout.
“We met with the union today in Toronto,” Daly told The Associated Press in an email. “We are supposed to touch base over the weekend. Nothing more to report right now.”
NHLPA spokesman Jonathan Weatherdon said any discussions this weekend won’t be in person.
The meeting on Friday marked the first negotiating session since talks broke off Tuesday in New York, where the sides had met four times in five days to discuss issues other than core economics.
