Al Kaleioumiwai Simmons, 78, of Hilo died Oct. 2 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hokumahoe, Laupahoehoe, he was a retired heavy equipment operator and member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Keaukaha Ward.
Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Hilo Stake Center for visitation. Friends may call again at 8 a.m. Oct. 12 at the stake center for a 10:30 a.m. service. Burial follows at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2. Family requests casual attire be worn.
He is survived by wife, Janet Simmons of Hilo; sons, Mervin Simmons and Jeremiah (Barbara) Simmons, both of Texas, John (Cathy) Simmons of Kona, Moses Simmons of Ka‘u, David Kaluna of Nevada, Simon (Lisa) Simmons of Hilo, Carl Simmons of Honolulu; daughters, Joycelyn (Anthony) Binney of Captain Cook, Katherine (Nam) Nguyen of Mountain View, Evangeline Simmons of Honolulu; brother, Kent (Pearl) Simmons of Kona; sister, Mililani (Robert) Naihe of Kona; 21 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; one uncle; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
