Big Island Woodworkers and Artists Invitational at Wailoa
The Wailoa Art and Cultural Center’s Main Gallery will celebrate the seventh annual Big Island Woodworkers and Artists Invitational show with a formal opening to meet the artists from 5 to 7 p.m. today.
The show will feature handmade furniture in custom arrangements that “set a scene” as it might look in a person’s home. Furniture displays will be accented with visual art from pastel artist Sandy Wallace and pottery from Clayton Amemiya.
In addition to the traditional lineup of artisan wood creations, the Big Island Ukulele Guild will contribute more than 30 handmade ukulele. Puna Ukulele and Kanikapila will be at the center from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Oct. 20 for an interactive ukulele jam.
The public may vote for People’s Choice Award winners for furniture and ukulele until the show’s closing Oct. 25.

Dance company fundraiser Saturday in Waimea
Prince Dance Company will hold a fundraiser in support of its “Que Suenes Con Las Angelitas” tour beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday at Saffron restaurant in Waimea.
The event will include a buffet dinner, no-host bar, dance lesson and live band. The cast of the show will be in attendance.
The company was founded by Angel Prince in 2007 and was in residency at the Kahilu Theatre until its recent closure. Prince and Beth Dunnington created “Que Suenes Con Las Angelitas,” which tells the story of a singer’s joyous and tragic life.
As well as a contemporary dance performance, the show also features an original script and music, trapeze and Argentine tango. The company is planning a 2013 tour of North and South America. Tickets are $35 and available at princedance.org.
Met Opera series debuts Oct. 13
Hollywood Theaters and the Hoku Concert Series will present “L’Elisir d’Amore” to open the second season of the Metropolitan Opera: Live in HD series. The comic opera will be screened at 12:55 p.m. Oct. 13 at Makalapua Cinemas. Anna Netrebko headlines the production directed by Barlett Sher.

APAC offers fall classes
Aloha Performing Arts Company Artistic Director Jerry Tracy will begin the next session of Tuesday Troupers on Tuesday. The class for 8- through 12-year-olds who are able to read, runs from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Nov. 20, excluding Election Day, at Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu. Students will dramatize personal stories of gratitude. Tuition is $60.
Aloha Teen Theatre, for ages 13 through 18, meets regularly from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Fridays at the APAC Loft. Sue Boyum is the group’s adviser. New members can join at any time to create and share performance and fundraising opportunities.
APAC Technical Director Ariana Bassett will teach Technology in Theatre from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Mondays, Nov. 5 through 26. Tuition is $40. The class will focus on developing the skills needed to execute lighting and sound designs.
Karen Barry will offer Public Speaking, a class for teens and adults, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Nov. 7, 8, 14 and 15. Tuition is $40.
A Halloween mask making workshop, including games and holiday activities, for ages 5 to 12, will be led by Carol Conner at the APAC Loft from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Oct. 27. Each child should bring a lunch. All materials will be provided. Tuition for the play day workshop is $25.

‘A Christmas Carol’ auditions planned
Aloha Performing Arts Company will hold open auditions for volunteer actors for its December production of “A Christmas Carol” at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 14 and 6:30 p.m. Oct. 15 at the Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu. All ages are needed for the large cast. Those auditioning need only attend one night and expect to stay approximately two hours. Callback auditions, if needed, may be held Oct. 16. Auditions will consist of readings from Susie Burke’s new adaptation of Dickens’ tale.
All roles are available, including Charles Dickens, who appears as a narrating character. Other characters include Ebenezer Scrooge, Will Fern, The Ghosts of Christmas Past, Christmas Present and Jacob Marley, The Cratchit Family and a chorus that will sing carols as a group and play various characters. British accents and singing ability are pluses, but will not be required of all cast members. Actors younger than 18 will need a permission form signed by a parent or legal guardian.

“A Christmas Carol” will be produced at the Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu Dec. 7 through 22, with Friday, Saturday and Sunday shows. Rehearsals will begin Oct. 22 and will generally be conducted Monday through Thursday evenings and Sunday afternoons. Experience is not required.
