Marciana Bolos

Marciana “Marci” Magdalina Bolos, 74, of Keaau died Sept. 19 at her residence. Born Sept. 27, 1937, in Hawi, she was a retail clerk, babysitter and St. Joseph Catholic Church member.

Friends may call Oct. 8 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo, where visitation will take place from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Mass begins at 10:30 a.m., followed by a burial at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2. The family requests casual attire be worn.

She is survived by husband, Benjamin Bolos of Keaau; daughters, Brenda (Chad) Leorin of Oahu, Renee Stolte and Tricia (John) Bejcek, both of Ohio; sons, Benton (Carrie) Bolos and Dayne (Tracy) Bolos, both of Hilo, Robin (Laurie) Bolos of Maui; sisters, Felisa (Ige) Mostoles, Loretta (Bully) Dante and Anita (Alvin) Maeda, all of Hilo; brothers, Ben (Terry) Castillo of Hilo, Carlos Castillo of Oahu; 16 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Kihei Tengan

Kihei Hatsue Tengan, 52, of Hilo died Sept. 12 at Hilo Medical Center. She was born on Molokai.

Friends may call at 4 p.m. Oct. 8 at Dodo Mortuary Chapel for a 5 p.m. service. Family requests aloha attire be worn.

She is survived by brothers, Felix Tengan of Hilo, Ethan (Sheila) Tengan of Keaau, Arnold (Linda) Tengan, Vernon (Irene) Tengan and Michael (Charlotte) Tengan, all of Hilo; sisters, Marietta Tengan and Ivonne (Mike) Everett, both of Hilo, Tania (Patrick) Kavanagh of Alaska, Casey (Tom) Wilder and Donna (Jack) Scaff, both of Honolulu, Annette (Steve) Chapman of Honokaa, Josephine (John) Starkey of Molokai; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

John Melvin Kaiawe, 67, of Kaloko died Sept. 9 at his residence. Born June 29, 1945, in Kealakekua, he was the owner of J.M.K. Equipment and member of Hui Makai Motorcycle Club.

Friends may call at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 6 at Calvary Community Church in Kailua-Kona for a 10:30 a.m. service. Family requests Hawaiian attire be worn. Flower lei are welcome.

Margaret Moore

Margaret “Maggie” Burnsed Moore, 95, of Kailua-Kona died Sept. 21 at her residence. Born Aug. 26, 1917, in Clarksdale, Miss., she was a retired supervising interviewer for Mississippi State Employment Services.

Friends may call at 2 p.m. Oct. 6 at Honokohau Harbor point for a service. Scattering of ashes follows.

She is survived by sons, Lexie (Edith) Moore of Kailua-Kona, Forrest Moore and Sage (Monica) Moore, both of Galveston, Texas; daughter, Harmony Moore of Austin, Texas.

Carey Ushijima

Carey Takashi Ushijima, 55, of Honalo died Sept. 18 at his residence. Born Aug. 27, 1957, in Kealakekua. He was a construction equipment mechanic for the County of Hawaii’s Automotive Division and member of Daifukuji Soto Mission.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. Oct. 6 at Daifukuji Soto Mission in Honalo for a 10 a.m. service. Family requests casual attire be worn and no flowers.

He is survived by parents, Toshio and Kikuko Ushijima of Honalo; sister, Janice (Maurice) Kameda of Honalo; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Alfred Obina

Alfred Obina, 89, of Hilo died Sept. 24 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Kohala, he was a retired parts department sales clerk for Hilo Motors.

Richard Buffington

Richard Dale Buffington, 80, of Kailua-Kona died Sept. 18 at Nakamaru Hale in Holualoa. Born May 26, 1932, in Bradford, Pa., he was a retired mechanical engineer for the Boeing Co. and a member of the Kona Yacht Club and Kona Bridge Club and a Coast Guard volunteer.

Private services were held.

He is survived by wife, Christine Buffington of Kailua-Kona; hanai daughters, Bebe and Lily Buffington, both of Kailua-Kona.

Betty Kahanaoi-Tseu

Betty Cecilia Kahanaoi-Tseu, 77, of Honolulu and Hilo died Sept. 4 at her home. Born Oct. 16, 1934, in Honolulu, she was a homemaker and worked for the Hawaii Regional Exchange at Fort Shafter and U.S. Marine Corps Exchange on Oahu.

Private services are planned.

She is survived by sons, Joseph (Vernette) Kahanaoi Jr. and Daniel Kahanaoi, both of Oahu; daughter, Kathleen (Timothy) Papalimu of Hilo; brothers, Sylvester (Beverly) Garcia and Peter Garcia, both of Oahu, Howard (Karen) Garcia of Kansas/Georgia; sister, Liberta Delasmenes of Oahu; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Stephen Porter

Stephen Wayne Porter, 59, of Keaau died Sept. 25 at his home. Born Oct. 30, 1952, in Cumberland County, Pa., he was a carpenter, mason, Marine Corps veteran and Pahoa Solid Rock Ministries member.

Joel Nicassio

Joel “Joe” Patrick Nicassio, 65, of Kealakekua died Sept. 8 at his residence. Born June 18, 1947, in Los Angeles, he was a long standing Kona resident, active in the building industry and owner of BioMatrix LLC and Advanced Concepts Home Inspections.

Private service was held.

He is survived by mother, Dorothy Nicassio of Sequim, Wash.; sister, Vicki Nicassio of Utah; two nieces.

Kazuye Ozaki

Kazuye Kay Ozaki, 101, of Kailua-Kona died Sept. 28 at her residence. Born March 5, 1911, in Azuza, Calif., she was a retired grocer and member of the Tri-State/Buddhist Temple in Denver.

Private services will be held at the Kona Hongwanji Mission.

She is survived by daughters, Florence Ozaki of Kailua-Kona, May (Gene) Peregrine of Roseville, Calif.; sister, Tazuko Miyamoto of Denver; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews.

Gilbert Yanagawa

Gilbert Asami Yanagawa, 83, of Pearl City, Oahu, died Sept. 30 in Holualoa. He was a retired Hawaiian Telephone Co. supervisor.

Samuel Kau

Samuel Hee Tong Kau, 72, of Honomalino died Sept. 22 at his residence. Born Sept. 5, 1940, in Honolulu, he was an Air Force veteran and organic farmer.

Friends may call from 1 p.m. until sunset Oct. 14 at the farm in Honomalino for a celebration of life.

He is survived by life partner, Lindy Pounds of Honomalino; daughters, Natasha (Cody) Curran of Kailua-Kona, Charisse (Melissa Gervais) Dickens of Washington, D.C.; son, Brandan Pounds of Milolii; two grandchildren; numerous cousins.
