Kona Orchid Society meeting Friday

The Kona Orchid Society meets at 6 p.m. Friday at the Hualalai Academy Bridge Building, 74-4966 Kealaka St., Kailua-Kona.

The speaker is Ben Oliveras, who will show pictures, as well as talk about the care of miltonias. He will discuss what fertilizer to use, how often to water, pest control and general care of the plant. His web site is orchideros.com. Those attending may go to the website and order plants in advance, and he will bring them with him to the meeting.

Members are asked to bring a dish to share for a potluck meal. Members will show some of their orchids at the meeting.

There will be a drawing for orchids later in evening.

Senior yoga classes offered at two sites

Elderly Recreation Services is offering senior yoga classes for those 55 and older. Senior yoga is a series of gentle stretches and breathing techniques that relax the body and mind and help reduce stress.

Classes are held at 8:30 a.m. Tuesdays at Yano Hall. Classes begin Oct. 15 at Hale Halawai and are held at 8:30 a.m. Mondays. Each month of classes is $10; registration and payment can be made the first day of class.

Big Island kennel clubs hosting fall shows

The Orchid Island Dog Fancier Club Inc. and Kona Coast Kennel Club will host all-breed shows Saturday, Sunday and Monday. In addition to these conformation events, the Hilo Obedience Training Club will host an all-breed rally trial Saturday and an all-breed obedience trial Sunday.

All events take place at the Edith Kanakaole Multipurpose Stadium in Hilo. The nonprofit clubs promote the sport of purebred dogs and responsible pet ownership.

Veterinarian Boyd Castro will answer canine-related questions during the Saturday and Sunday shows.

College 101 seminar slated for Saturday

Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union announces a free educational seminar on “College 101” to be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the John Y. Iwane Credit Union Center training room at its Kaloko facility.

The seminar will feature presentations by Lilinoi Grace, educational specialist at the West Hawaii Education Center, and Jeff Scofield, director of financial aid at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Key topics include how to simplify the college and financial aid application process, financial aid issues for 2012, general eligibility requirements for financial aid and what is FAFSA and how to apply for it.

VFW members
meet Saturday

The Christopher Camero Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12122 meets at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Elks Lodge in Kailua-Kona. All members and veterans who have seen foreign service in time of conflict are urged to attend.

Members will be forming committees to help organize the 75th state convention to be held next year in Kona.
