Storytelling events planned at VAC

Storytelling events planned at VAC

Storyteller Kimberly Dark will present her Written and Verbal Storytelling workshop from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village. Dark will return to Volcano to host VAC’s new event, Story Flow, at 7 p.m. Oct. 13.

Writing, storytelling games and guidance will make up the workshop as participants learn to identify themes, use strategies and various storytelling devices all for the sake of audience entertainment. The afternoon will be spent practicing those techniques. The cost is $50 or $45 for VAC members. Call 967-8222 to register.

“The first time” is the theme for October’s Story Flow, the first in a planned recurring monthly series for writers to take the stage to perform an original work. No more than 10 stories will be shared.

Writers may present up to six minutes of topical material — whether memorized or improvised. Sign-up begins at 6:45 p.m. The entry fee is $6. All stories in keeping with the theme are welcome for this noncompetitive event.

For more information, visit volcanoartcenter.org or contact VAC Program Coordinator Julie Callahan at 967-8222 or julie@volcanoartcenter.org.

Horse expo raises
$20K in donations

The fifth annual Hawaii Island Humane Society’s Hawaii Horse Expo resulted in a donation of nearly $20,000 to the society’s Horse Rescue Fund.

The event also benefited the Paniolo Preservation Society, which saw substantial improvements made to Pukalani Stables. The expo was held in August at Waimea’s Paniolo Heritage Center.

The Hawaii Horse Expo provides horse owners and enthusiasts the opportunity to learn from world-renowned experts in a variety of equine-related disciplines.

“We are thrilled with the results this year,” Hawaii Horse Expo Producer Nancy Jones said in a prepared statement. “The location at Pukalani Stables and the partnership with the Paniolo Preservation Society seem ideal and we are already looking forward to the August 2013 Expo.”

Over the past five years, funds raised during the expo for the society’s Horse Rescue Fund have supported the establishment of a first-class equine holding facility at the Hawaii Island Humane Society Waimea shelter. Staff has developed a protocol for equine evaluation and post-rescue care. In 2012, 24 horses and one donkey passed through the gates of the society.
