This past Sunday, the Queen Kaahumanu Triathlon Club hosted a run/bike/run event at Kua Bay.

This past Sunday, the Queen Kaahumanu Triathlon Club hosted a run/bike/run event at Kua Bay.

The race took the athletes for a three-mile run, a 40-mile bike ride along the famed Queen Kaahumanu Highway and an eight-mile run.

Matt Burton, the 2011 Ford Ironman World Championship age 18-24 division winner, finished first with a total time of 2 hours, 57 minutes, 52 seconds.

Dave Burger, who finished second with a time of 3:02:11, had the fastest time for the bike course at 1:45:18. Third place went to Jeremy Withrow with a time of 3:36:06.

The team of Rob Van Geen and Kym Kiser took first place for the relay teams with a combined time of 3:30:02. Shirley and Dave Pratt’s team finished second with a time of 3:57:06.

Congratulations to all who went out and competed in this race.

The Big Island Interscholastic Federation cross-country season continued on Sept. 22 with a race at Waiakea. The course was hot and a true test of endurance.

The first-place finisher for the girls race, Hawaii Prep’s Kristiana Van Pernis, ran the three-mile race in 20:20. Second place went to Hilo’s Kamehana Jabado-Halpern (20:28), and third went to Kealakehe’s Kari Van Mols (20:29).

In the boys race, Hilo’s Stephen Hunter finished first with a time of 17:40. Waiakea’s Ian McQuate (17:48) was second, and third place went to Parker’s Paul Gregg (17:50).

Congratulations to all the BIIF cross-country runners this season. You are an inspiration. Good luck to all the runners at HPA on Saturday.

On Sunday, Team Mango will hold its Pre-Ironman Triathlon Challenge. The race will include a 1.2-mile swim, a hilly 15-mile bike ride and a hilly six-mile run. The race will start at 7 a.m. at Kailua Pier. For more information, please go to teammangoraces.com.

The following Sunday, Peoples Advocacy for Trails Hawaii will hold its annual PATH Run. The event, which takes place at 7:30 a.m. at Hale Halawai on Alii Drive, includes a five-kilometer run/walk, a 10k run and a keiki dash.

Please remember that there are many athletes out on the road from now until mid-October in preparation for the Ironman world championship.
