A 34-year-old Hilo man died Thursday after nearly drowning Sunday while snorkeling with his son in a Keokea Point tide pool.

Chris Broussard of Hilo and his 9-year-old son were snorkeling in a tide pool in the Brown’s Beach area Sunday morning when a large wave swept the boy out of the tide pool, according to the Hawaii Police Department. Broussard jumped into the ocean in an attempt to save the boy, but by the time bystanders were able to pull the child to safety, Broussard was floating face down in the water.

Fire rescue personnel took him to Hilo Medical Center, where he died at 10:10 a.m. Thursday, according to police.

Police are investigating the case as a fatal public accident.
