The second annual Hawaii Artists Collaboration needs junk.
The Holualoa event, held Oct. 16 to 19, will feature more than 30 artists using junk and other items to create art. With that in mind, the collaboration is asking Big Islanders to donate any cool, retro or unused items such as old tools, gears, bikes and wheels.
Pickup is available for items within West Hawaii. Items may also be dropped off at Tai Lake’s studio in Holualoa or at Discovery Antiques, which can be reached at 323-2239.
Volcano Arts Center hosts ‘Tiny Treasures’
The Volcano Art Center Gallery at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park presents “Tiny Treasures,” an invitational jewelry exhibition on display from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday through Nov. 11.
“Tiny Treasures” features works of fine art, craft and jewelry designs from a diverse collection of Hawaii artists, including J. Bennett, Danielle Bolton, Brenda May Ching, Daniel E. Rokovitz, Amy Flanders, Patricia Larsen-Goodin, Wayne Keeth, Jessica Landau, Stone O’Daugherty, Pat Pearlman, Tad Sewell, Stacey Siegel, Jamie Stokes and Candice Wakumoto.
An opening reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday. The exhibition is free to the public though park entrance fees apply.

Barela Gallery to hold grand opening Oct. 5
The public is invited to join artist Chris Barela at the grand opening of his gallery at The Shops at Mauna Lani from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 5.
The gallery will feature limited edition bronze sculptures and fine art photography, as well as original oil paintings and jewelry. The opening exhibit honors the beauty of the Hawaiian Islands seen through the eyes of Barela, an artist, inventor, pro surfer, sculptor, photographer and award-winning filmmaker.
Barela’s background as a professional surfer is the inspiration for his artwork. His lifelike game fish in bronze jumps out of the water, and his patina work is bright, reflecting beauty and natural hues. Barela’s octopus sculpture is one of his most popular pieces, detailed with more than 1680 suction cups. His bronze turtles are prized by collectors.
Barela Gallery is a full-service gallery that will feature an international group of artists. The grand opening will feature a pupu and wine reception and door prizes. Visit barelaart.com for more information.
Coffee art competition scheduled for Nov. 7, 8
Kona coffee is the inspiration as artists are encouraged to enter artwork to the Kona Coffee Art Exhibit competition Nov. 7 and 8 at the Sheraton Kona Resort and Spa at Keauhou Bay. The show is co-directed by Kowali Farm and the Donkey Mill Art Center.
Entries must have coffee as their subject or medium, and may be 2-D wall art, or free standing 3-D art. The categories will be judged separately and together for the Peoples’ Choice Award. Art entries may be selected for inclusion in a show at the Donkey Mill Art Center.

The Kona Coffee Cultural Festival is the oldest food festival in Hawaii. The 2012 festival is set to run from Nov. 2 to 11 featuring events that promote Hawaii’s unique culture and diversity and supporting the festival’s mission to preserve, perpetuate and promote Kona’s unique coffee heritage.
Ocean Film Festival slated Jan. 3 to 11
The third annual Waimea Ocean Film Festival is planned from Jan. 3 to 6 in Waimea and Jan. 8 to 11 at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai.
The world-class festival includes films, breakfast talks, question-and-answer sessions with filmmakers, receptions and art exhibits. Designed to be fun and inspiring, the festival also brings increased understanding and awareness of the ocean and island culture.

Firehouse Gallery to host artists reception
The public is invited to attend an artists reception and awards presentation for the 28th annual Helen Cassidy Juried Art Show slated from 3 to 5 p.m. Oct. 6 at the Firehouse Gallery in Waimea.
The show runs from Wednesday through Oct. 28 and features works by local artists.
