A U.S. Senate forum is scheduled for 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Kealakehe High School cafeteria. Both former Gov. Linda Lingle and Rep. Mazie Hirono have been invited to participate. As of press time, Lingle has accepted the invitation and will attend; Hirono has not responded with a yes or no. Should only one candidate attend, the forum will proceed, with questions posed from the moderator. Attendees may submit questions at the meeting, as well.

“Get Your Pink On” with North Hawaii Community Hospital
North Hawaii Community Hospital will hold its 12th annual Girls Night Out from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 5 at Kanu o ka Aina New Century Public Charter School in Waimea. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Girls Night Out helps keep the women in North Hawaii healthy, happy and informed. This year’s theme is “Get Your Pink On.”
The event will feature a trade show by local resources and businesses, including massage, hair styling, manicures, makeup, energy work and acupuncture. Several booths will also offer items for sale, including jewelry and makeup. Women will also be treated to complimentary dinner, breast cancer bingo, silent auction and door prizes. A variety of women’s health and wellness information will also be provided to Girl Night Out attendees by West Hawaii Mediation Center, bone density screenings by Foodland, Planned Parenthood, NHCH’s Rehabilitation Services, NHCH’s Waimea Women’s Center and NHCH’s Breast Health Program.
NHCH recently announced its new Breast Health Program, which offers patients access to the latest cutting-edge technology, a more comfortable experience, faster image analysis and ongoing support, in coordination with Hawaii’s new mammography self-referral law. Thanks to a new Hawaii state law, which took effect on July 1, for the first time ever, women older than 40 have the right and ability to choose when, where and with whom they’d like to schedule their annual breast-screening exam, without a referral from their primary care physician. Early detection is key in treating breast cancer, and annual mammography can help detect breast tumors at their earliest, most treatable stages.

Jewelry program slated at library
Jewelry artist Sid Nakamoto will demonstrate a simple jewelry design for the next North Kohala Public Library adult and teen craft program on Monda. Nakamoto will offer two sessions of the same program — at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Materials will be provided for participants to create their own jewelry piece.
Because of the popularity of his jewelry workshops, a limit has been placed on the number of participants. Call the library at 889-6655 to register for the afternoon or evening session of this program.
North Kohala Public Library’s adult and teen craft programs are free and materials are donated by the artist or the Friends of the Library. The library is located adjacent to Takata Grocery Store in Kapaau.
Coral graffiti is program topic
Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park is having a program titled “Coral Graffiti in Hawaii” beginning at 6 p.m. Wednesday. John Sabati will be guest speaker and will talk about the pros and cons of this medium and its impact on the environment and the landscape of Hawaii. The program will be held in the amphitheater.
