PTA to allow bow hunting this weekend

Pohakuloa Training Area will open several areas to bow hunting Saturday and Sunday.

Training Areas 1 through 4, 10 and 11 will be open for mammal hunting between 5 a.m. and 7 p.m. No early access to hunting areas is permitted. Hunters must check out by 7 p.m. each day.

All hunters must check in and out at either the Kilohana Hunter’s Check in Station located between mile markers 43 and 44 on Saddle Road or the Huluhulu Hunter’s Check in Station located at the intersection of Mauna Kea Access and Saddle roads — near mile marker 28.

Hunting passes will be available at both check-in stations after 5 p.m. Friday. Hunters should place the pass on their vehicle dashboards when hunting. Hunting passes are only valid for Saturday and Sunday.

PTA is extremely dry and fires can start easily. No smoking or open flames are allowed in all training and hunting areas. All fires should be reported to the PTA Federal Fire Department at 969-2447 or 969-2448.

No firearms, alcoholic beverages, all-terrain vehicles, dirt bikes or recreational vehicles are allowed in the training and hunting areas. All gates should be closed when entering or leaving hunting areas.

For more information, call the Hunter’s Hotline at 969-3474 or the Public Affairs Office at 969-2427.

Breakfast tickets cost $8 and may be purchased from class members or at the door. Donations are being accepted for the fundraisers.

Call Jeff Duggan at 323-4500 for more information or to contribute by 3 p.m. Friday.

Project Compassion benefits Alano Club

The Kona Rotary Club in a joint effort with Denny’s restaurants holds a monthly charitable event for various nonprofit organizations in the Kona area. This Sunday, the Kona Alano Club will be the beneficiary and the host of this event.

The Kona Alano Club is a venue for 12-step meetings of recovery from alcohol and substance abuse. It holds as many as 30 meetings a week and serves up to 80 people in recovery every day. The club helps to reduce the amount of impaired drivers and teaches its participants alternatives to domestic violence.

The club receives 20 percent of Denny’s income from 4:30 to 9 p.m. Sunday and all the tips from the guest servers.

Zumba event benefits Arc of Kona

Katie Moore will conduct a Zumba workout at the Konawaena High School gym to raise funds for the Arc of Kona and its group home in Captain Cook, which was recently burglarized. The possessions of the residents were taken and the building was trashed.

The event will last from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Sunday. A donation of $10 is suggested.

For more information, call Katherine at 323-2626.
