WASHINGTON — Reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw was examined Tuesday by a hip specialist who said the Los Angeles left-hander can continue to pitch without risking damage to his sore right hip — but the Dodgers want to keep him sidelined if the pain persists.
The team said Kershaw would restart a throwing program Tuesday, when the Dodgers’ scheduled game at the Washington Nationals was postponed by rain.
Jeweler settles suit against ex-Duke player
DALLAS — Former Duke basketball player Lance Thomas has settled a lawsuit that accused him of failing to pay nearly $68,000 for jewelry purchased while he was part of the Blue Devils team that won the 2010 national championship.
Mike Bowers, the attorney for Rafaello & Co., said his client had agreed to settle the lawsuit against Thomas stemming from the nearly $100,000 in diamond jewelry the player purchased in the middle of the 2009-2010 season. The Dallas attorney said the terms are confidential, and he reiterated his client’s unwillingness to discuss the matter with the NCAA, which is seeking details of the transaction.
Forward Ivan Johnson re-signs with Hawks
ATLANTA — The Atlanta Hawks have re-signed forward Ivan Johnson, who made a surprise impact as an undrafted rookie last season.
The 28-year-old Johnson averaged 6.4 points and 4.0 rebounds in 56 games. He led the team by making 51.3 percent of his shots from the field and ranked fourth in rebounds.
The 6-foot-8, 255-pound Johnson was the NBA’s rookie of the month for April.
General manager Danny Ferry announced Johnson’s new deal on Tuesday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Campbell to undergo nerve treatment
AUSTIN, Texas — NFL Hall of Famer Earl Campbell said Tuesday he is undergoing nerve treatment after doctors ruled out concerns that he might have Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Campbell, 57, will receive treatment and testing in Austin this weekend aimed at trying to “trigger the nerves a little faster,” said Tyler Campbell, his son. He said his father was otherwise doing well but acknowledged the process will affect the former Heisman Trophy winner’s recent physical rehabilitation to move around quicker.
NASCAR reinstates
AJ Allmendinger
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — NASCAR reinstated A.J. Allmendinger on Tuesday, saying the driver had successfully completed its rehabilitation program after testing positive for a banned substance.
Allmendinger was suspended two months ago after failing a random drug test in June and his backup “B’’ urine sample later tested positive. NASCAR has not revealed the substance, but he has said he tested positive for Adderall, a prescription drug typically used to treat attention deficit disorder. He does not have an ADD diagnosis or prescription, and said he took it a couple of days before the June 30 race at Kentucky Speedway because he was tired.
Allmendinger was suspended July 7, just hours before the race at Daytona, forcing Penske Racing to bring in Sam Hornish Jr. at the last moment.
Marlins’ Stanton
out until Friday
MIAMI — Miami Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton is expected to remain out of the starting lineup until Friday with a strained muscle in his side.
Stanton said he felt a little better Tuesday, but he was held out for the second night in a row against the Atlanta Braves. Manager Ozzie Guillen said he might be available to pinch-hit.
White: ‘Truly sorry for my poor behavior’
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Olympic snowboard champion Shaun White apologized Tuesday for “unwise choices,” saying he got “carried away” after police accused him of pulling a hotel fire alarm that forced guests to evacuate.
White was charged with public intoxication and vandalism and is due in court Oct. 10.
Top seed Youzhny wins at St. Petersburg
ST. PETERSBURG, Russia —Top-seeded Mikhail Youzhny of Russia beat Michal Pospisil of Canada 7-6 (4), 6-1 Tuesday to advance to the second round of the St. Petersburg Open.
Two other seeded players were eliminated in first-round matches: Lukas Lacko of Slovakia and Yen-Hsun Lu of Taiwan.
The fifth-seeded Lacko was beaten 6-3, 6-2 by Grega Zemlja of Slovenia, while the sixth-seeded Lu lost to Roberto Bautista-Agut of Spain 6-4, 6-2.

Davydenko beats Zverev in Metz
METZ, France —Nikokaly Davydenko of Russia beat Mischa Zverev of Germany 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 on Tuesday in the first round of the Moselle Open.
Also, Clement Reix beat Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 in an all-French match and will meet defending champion and top-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
Bartoli, Niculescu out of Guangzhou Open
GUANGZHOU, China — Top-seeded Marion Bartoli of France and sixth-seeded Monica Niculescu of Romania were knocked out in the first round of the Guangzhou Open on Tuesday.
Taiwanese qualifier Kai-Chen Chang was leading Bartoli 4-3 when the Frenchwoman retired with an injury. Mathilde Johansson of France defeated Niculescu 7-5, 6-2. The 27-year-old Johansson won despite 12 double-faults.
