The cancer support group You’ll Never Walk Alone meets from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Thursday. Cancer survivors and co-survivors are invited to attend the group’s meetings held the first and third Thursday of every month. Light refreshments are served.

County band performing Friday
The West Hawaii County Band will perform “September Memories” featuring works by Hoagy Carmichael, John Phillip Sousa and Antonio Vivaldi. The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation will host this free concert at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Hale Halawai. Some bench seating is provided and lawn chairs are welcome.
CBB spray demo
slated for Saturday
A field day on sprayer equipment and techniques, leaf and soil sampling of coffee and coffee berry borer field sampling is scheduled from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Greenwell Farms, 81-6581 Mamalahoa Highway, Kealakekua.
Spray equipment is used to control pests like CBB, diseases, and to apply foliar fertilizers to crops. All of the basics of sprayer equipment and spraying techniques, including finding contractors for hire, buying CBB traps. Participants will also view sprayers and discuss what works and what doesn’t work with other farmers.
Extension Agent Andrea Kawabata will demonstrate leaf and soil sampling. Participants will learn the importance of sampling, when and how to do leaf and soil sampling of coffee trees, costs associated with submissions and how to submit samples for analysis.
Also discussed will be how to get a general infestation rate for a farm and how to effectively time spray efforts for maximum CBB kill.
This field day is free to the public but reservations are due by Friday by calling 322-4894 or emailing andreak@hawaii.edu.
Participants should bring a chair, umbrella and sunscreen for comfort in the sun. Walking shoes are recommended.
Peace Day events planned in Kona
In conjunction with the annual United Nations International Day of Peace on Friday, the Pacific Rim Education Foundation is organizing an inaugural Kona Peace Day with a list of suggested personal activities and free public events to help nurture a culture and community of peace in Kona.
The all-day Kona Peace Day begins at noon Friday with a minute of silence and peace. The action is part of a worldwide wave of individuals spending one minute of silence at noon in each time zone. A number of Kona places of worship will ring their bells at noon.
The foundation, a Hawaii-based, nonprofit organization that supports education and activities that nurture love, wisdom and peace, suggests that Peace Day participants undertake a small act of service for peace for someone in their immediate environment — whether a family member, co-worker or stranger.
Free public events include a 5 p.m. yoga for peace class led by Marya Mann on the oceanfront lawn at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel. Participants should bring their own mat or towel.
A potluck dinner and discussion begins at 7 p.m. at the Kona Outdoor Circle, 76-6280 Kuakini Highway. Bring a dish to share and hear a brief peace talk by the Rev. Virginia Barnes of the Aloha Center for Spiritual Living. For reservations, call Betsy at 987-6510.
In addition, peace enthusiasts can participate in the 22nd annual Candlelight Peace Walk beginning at 7 p.m. Sunday. It steps off from the lawn at Huggo’s restaurant and proceeds to Kailua Pier.

Snorkel day for disabled planned
Deep and Beyond hosts a Kona snorkel day for people with disabilities from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at Kahaluu Beach Park in Keauhou. Bring a dish to share for lunch.

Chairs for Charity returns on Saturday
The Rotary Club of Kona Sunrise is hosting its second annual Chairs For Charity Art Scholarship Fundraiser beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday at the King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel luau grounds. Funds raised from this event support local students seeking college majors in the arts.
More than 20 local artists from Kona, Holualoa, Waimea, Hilo and Volcano have contributed their talents, creating one-of-a-kind works of art, not only including chairs, but also tables, benches, surfboards and more. Artists participating represent several well-known galleries including Rumley, Wyland, One, and Genesis galleries and Donkey Mill Art Center. A live auction will be held.
In addition to the chairs, the artists have contributed other works for the silent auction. Tickets are priced at $48 and are available at Kona Wine Market and Kailua Candy Co. or by calling Laura Kniffin at 854-9075. Tickets are limited.
