Police arrested 26 drivers for suspected drunken driving between Sept. 3 and Sunday; six were involved in traffic accidents and four were younger than 21.

Police arrested 26 drivers for suspected drunken driving between Sept. 3 and Sunday; six were involved in traffic accidents and four were younger than 21.

Police have made 973 suspected DUI arrests this year compared with 1,017 during the same period in 2011, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

South Hilo officers arrested a dozen motorists and Kona officers 10, according to police. South Kohala officers arrested three drivers while Hamakua officers arrested one.

There have been 1,006 major accidents this year compared with 964 during the same period last year.

As of Sunday, there were 27 traffic fatalities on Big Island public roadways, compared with 15 fatalities during the same period in 2011, according to police. Police say five of those fatalities were related to drugs, three to alcohol and six to a combination of alcohol and drugs.
