Parker seniors are NMS semifinalists
Parker School seniors Paul Gregg and Aidan Wharton have been selected as semifinalists in the 2013 National Merit Scholar-ship Program.
If they advance to finalist standing, they will find out in March if they are in the group of approximately 8,300 winners of a National Merit Scholarship Award. The awards range from a $2,500 lump sum scholarship, to corporate-sponsored and college-sponsored scholarships.
Along with their academic successes, both Gregg and Wharton are active in Parker School and the community. This year, Wharton is student council president and Gregg vice-president. Both are accomplished singers and Gregg a musician, and have held starring singing roles in Parker’s after-school drama program, Dramatiques’ productions of “Beauty and the Beast,” “Les Miserables,” “Guys & Dolls,” among other productions. Both have been members of Parker’s award-winning debate team and are also accomplished athletes at the school.
Educators’ workshop slated in Waimea
Hawaii Learning Resource has partnered with Assets School to provide a free educator workshop, Project Read: Written Expression Module. The workshop is from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Hawaii Preparatory Academy village campus dining hall in Waimea. The workshop is designed to help educators teach students to express their thoughts through writing using multisensory strategies and materials.
Robyn McMullin, curriculum specialist at Assets School, an independent Honolulu school for gifted or dyslexic children, will present the workshop. McMullin is a certified member of the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators and a certified Project Read written expression facilitator. She has provided numerous workshops and trainings for Hawaii educators and parents.

College representative visiting Big Island
Lisa Knodle-Bragiel, director of admission from Linfield College, will visit Parker School at 10:30 a.m., Hawaii Preparatory Academy at noon and Honokaa High School at 1:45 p.m. Sept. 19.
She will meet with students and parents to discuss admission requirements, course offerings and financial aid offered through the college.
Linfield College is an independent, comprehensive undergraduate institution, recognized for its strong teaching faculty, outstanding academic programs and distinctive international emphasis. The college is located one hour south of Portland, Ore., and offers 40 majors and three undergraduate degrees. Study abroad is combined with curricular and extracurricular programs.
Hualalai Academy to receive Macy’s grant
Hualalai Academy recently received word it will be awarded a Macy’s Holiday Production grant to perform the musical, “Yes, Virginia.”
Based on the animated holiday special, the stage production was written specifically for school children and features new songs by Emmy Award-winning songwriters.
Macy’s is making “Yes, Virginia” available to teachers royalty-free. Hualalai Academy is one of 100 schools nationwide that received a $1,000 theater grant to help put on the show.

Kealakehe council meets Sept. 20
Kealakehe High School’s Community Council meets from 5:15 to 7 p.m. Sept. 20 in the school’s staff cafeteria dining room.
Discussing the school’s field trip policy is on the agenda, as well as perfect attendance awards and acknowledging students who have won awards, including college choices, the electronic use policy and school grounds maintenance.
