Kona Pacific Farmers Co-op is holding a free coffee berry borer workshop beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday at the co-op site, 82-5810 Napoopoo Road, Captain Cook. Topics to be covered include the borer’s impact on bees and other pollinators, a harvesting update, the pest’s life cycle, surveying for the pest, mitigation, record keeping, sampling and quality control and farmer income impacts.

Suicide prevention
vigil slated Friday
A candlelight vigil in memory of loved ones who have been lost to suicide will take place at 6 p.m. Friday on the front lawn of St. Michael’s Church on Alii Drive in Kailua-Kona. The event is sponsored by the West Hawaii Suicide Prevention Task Force.

Soy sauce workshop
is Wednesday
The public is invited to learn how to make pure, healthy soy sauce and tempeh during a workshop from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at One Island’s Sustainable Living Center in Honaunau.
Participants will learn how to get soy sauce fermentation started, make a block of tempeh to take home to enjoy in a few days and partake of a vegan tempeh reuben lunch.
Teachers are Matt Lovein and Raven Bolas. The fee is $35 and includes materials and lunch. Reservations may be made at hawaii@one-island.org.
Cruise Night
scheduled for Saturday
Lanihau Center’s Cruise Night is open to all car, motorcycle and truck owners who would like to show off their rides. The free event runs from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday and takes place in the former Bank of Hawaii parking lot.
Special Olympics West Hawaii is the featured nonprofit for September. Special Olympics helps athletes develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skill and friendship with fellow athletes, families and the community. Its teams compete in area games on the Big Island and Maui in order to qualify for the State Games on Oahu, where Special Olympics teams throughout the Hawaiian Islands compete for medals
Big Island Television celebrates the achievements of Special Olympics West Hawaii athletes by donating $1,000 in commercial airtime to any individual or business that donates $500 to Special Olympics at Saturday’s event.
Prize giveaways will be held every half hour from 6:30 through 8:30 p.m. Everyone making a donation to Special Olympics will receive giveaway tickets. Prizes from Lanihau Center merchants will be featured.
Dozens of custom, classic and unique vehicles come and go during the three-hour event. There is no entry or admission fee. At 7:30 p.m., all participants are invited to line up for a cruise around the parking lot. A new “No Burn-Out” rule will be in effect for the safety of the public.
