Food fundraisers
begin Sept. 15

State Senate Dist. 4 candidate Malama Solomon and friends will cook and serve some of Hawaii Island’s favorite local treats at three major community events in coming weeks, and donate every penny earned to community programs.

Friends of Malama Solomon will contribute 100 percent of food booth proceeds to support Kahilu Theatre, and Honokaa and Kohala high school athletics at three community events — the Waimea Paniolo Parade and Hoolaulea, Honokaa Peace Day Parade and the Kohala Country Fair.

The fundraiser schedule is as follows:

c Sept. 15: Paniolo chili and nachos booth at Hawaii Island Festival’s 37th annual Waimea Paniolo Parade and Hoolaulea in Waimea Park. Made from local grass-fed Hamakua beef, the menu includes chili and rice, chili dogs and nachos for a $5 per plate donation. All proceeds support the volunteer-driven community group that has rallied to save Kahilu Theatre after financial woes forced suspension of its 2012-13 performance season.

c Sept. 22: Dragons’ ice cream sundae booth, a benefit for Honokaa High School athletics, will be held at the sixth annual Peace Day Parade and Festival at Honokaa Sports Complex. A $2 per sundae donation will support the high school’s student athletics program.

c Oct. 6: A Kohala steak fry plate lunch booth benefits Kohala High School athletics at the Kohala Country Fair. A $5 per plate donation will go to the school’s athletics program.

For more information or to secure food tickets in advance, call or email Malama Solomon at 938-8353 or malama_solomon@yahoo.com, Hulali Covington at 938-6357 or poohala2002@yahoo.com or Patti Cook at 937-2833 or cookshi@aol.com. Information also available on malamasolomon.com and Facebook.
