An 18-year-old Hilo man is facing robbery and car theft offenses stemming from an Aug. 30 incident in Puna.

Michael Gary Perreira-Thompson was charged Tuesday with second-degree robbery and unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle in connection with the Aug. 30 incident in which a 26-year-old Keaau man reported being assaulted by a male hitchhiker, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

The 26-year-old reportedly picked up Perriera-Thompson and a woman near the intersection of Route 130 and Ainaloa Boulevard and drove them to the lower portion of Hawaiian Paradise Park, according to police. Once arriving, the 26-year-old told police he got out of the vehicle and was assaulted by the male hitchhiker. The hitchhiker then entered the vehicle and drove off with the woman, who never exited the vehicle.

The 26-year-old man declined medical treatment for non life-threatening injuries, according to police.

Police located the unoccupied vehicle, which was apparently abandoned, in the same subdivision.

Police arrested Perreira-Thompson Tuesday morning and charged him later in the day. His bail was set at $35,000 pending an initial court appearance scheduled for today.
