Coach Dennis Agena, of Kalakaua Basketball, and his staff will conduct a three-day youth basketball clinic Oct. 12-14 at the county gym in Honokaa.

Children ages 6-18 may participate. Sponsored by the Hamakua Athletic Association, the clinic will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 12, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 13 and 8 a.m to 4 p.m. Oct. 14. Times may vary based on the number of participants.

Players need to bring a basketball, basketball shoes, water and proper playing attire. The registration fee is $60. Registration and waiver forms are available at Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation offices, Ted’s Garage in Honokaa and Sports Line in Hilo.

Fall Kupuna softball league starting Sunday

The fall Kupuna softball league will start play Sunday. The league is for players, men and women, 50 years and older.

The league will play on Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m. and will run through Nov. 18. The league will play one nine inning game each Sunday at the Old Kona Airport Park fields.

The league will hold a blind draft of players before the season begins. For more information, call Martin Hauser at 443-9724.

Detroit sports personalities
on Emily T. Gail Show

Karen Hudson Samuels, who works at WGPR in Detroit, is a guest on this week’s Emily T. Gail Show, which is available under “lineup” at espnhawaii.com and as an iTunes podcast.

Samuels will discuss her work at the station, the first station to be owned by black people, and she will discuss Detroit’s place as a sports town. Continuing the Detroit theme, longtime Detroit sports talk show host Ron Cameron will reflect on his 42-year career.

Also, Joe Maher will discuss the many Major League Baseball players he met while growing up in Detroit.

Cynthia Hope will discuss her efforts with Kona Skatepark Association. Gail will have information on the Oct. 6 Kukio Blue Water Swim.
