Hawaii Prep’s Zoe Sims showed she’s ready to defend her Big Island Interscholastic Federation girls cross-country title on Saturday, claiming top honors in an all-schools meet in Waimea.
Sims, a senior, placed first in the three-mile girls run in 21 minutes, 14.21 seconds, beating junior teammate Kristina Van Pernis (21:56.09) and Hilo sophomore Mahana Sabado-Halpern (22:12.43) to the finish line. Viking junior Carmen Garson-Shumway was fourth in 22:34.73.
Host Ka Makani, the defending BIIF and state champion under coach Michael Franklin, placed four girls in the top seven on Saturday. Junior Mariah Haight took fifth in 22:34.97, and freshman Erin Evans was seventh in 23:06.09.
In the boys three-mile race, St. Joseph senior Andrew Langtry fought off Hilo junior Stephen Hunter and Waiakea junior Ian McQuate for top honors. Langtry ran 18:32.47 to claim first, Hunter ran in 18:57.18, and McQuate finished in 19:04.01.
Hilo juniors Isreal Sims (19:11.60) and Timon Skinner (19:12.11) rounded out the top five, respectively.
Honokaa graduate Chayce Moniz was the BIIF boys champion last year. There were 138 girls and 224 boys who ran in Saturday’s meet at HPA.
The BIIF season continues Saturday with an all-schools meet at Kamehameha-Hawaii. Action starts at 10 a.m.
