Kohala Country Fair has booth spaces
Booth space is available at the 28th annual Kohala Country Fair slated for Oct. 6.
The fair website, kohalacountryfair.com, has all the details and plans, including information on new activities such as “X-Box Dance Central” and new demonstrations. Off-street parking space has been increased for this year’s event.
Booth space is available, with fees ranging from $150 for food booths to $25 for a table in the agricultural and “Made in Kohala” tents. Applications are available at the website; Sept. 15 is the registration deadline.

Meeting to discuss food self-sufficiency
Food self-sufficiency is the main topic for Waimea Community Association’s town meeting scheduled to begin at 5:15 p.m. Thursday in the Waimea School cafeteria.
Jeff Melrose will present the County of Hawaii Food Self-Sufficiency Baseline Study which summarizes the results of a new Geographic Information System mapping effort that has digitized the agricultural activity currently occurring on Hawaii Island. This data provides a 2012 snapshot of where, and what kind of, farming is occurring on the island and can serve as a baseline to monitor future trends in agriculture land use.
The study includes the list “100 Ways to Increase Food Self-Sufficiency,” which identifies ways each person can be part of the solution.
Also on the agenda will be a brief update by community volunteer Mel Macy on the 24-acre Waimea District Park, for which a memorandum of understanding was recently signed between Parker Ranch and the county.
North Hawaii Community Hospital CEO Ken Wood will provide an update including Kaheleaulani, the hospital’s new Native Hawaiian health program.
Town meetings are open to the public. Donations are collected for the local food pantry.

Line dance classes begin Thursday
A new session of line dance classes begins Thursday. Classes are held once a week at the Kona United Methodist Church on Palani Road in Kailua-Kona. A beginners class is from 6 to 7 p.m. and for the more experienced from 7 to 8. The eight-week session ends Oct. 25.
The session cost is $35 for one class, or $49 for both. One night drop-in fee is $7 for one class, $9 for both.
All ages are welcome and children younger than 12 may attend free of charge.

Officer of the Year celebration is Sept. 12
The Kona Crime Prevention Committee’s Officer of the Year celebration is set for 11:30 a.m. Sept. 12 at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel. The officers for each month will be honored and the officer of the year will be announced.
