The Living Arts Gallery in Hawi will exhibit member artist Ginger Anne Sandell’s recent paintings during September and October, with an artist’s reception Sept. 29.

Sandell paints in an impressionist, abstract style where line, color and form vary from a realistic portrayal of the world. She said she wants the visual image to connect with people emotionally and hopes to bring beauty, wonder and joy to the observer. To the artist, creativity has both a tactile and spiritual nature, she added.

Sandell’s recent paintings include figurative works, such as her story of motherhood in a piece called “Protection.” The woman in the painting has a certain sadness in her face, coupled with determination. The lava in front of her flickers while she struggles with the weight of the child. Though she may struggle, the mother will deliver the child, at any cost, to adulthood or the freedom of the sea.

The painting “Reflection” is of a girl leaving the safety of her childhood behind. She rests by a stream contemplating her life and her future as she enters the uncharted waters of adulthood.

Living Arts Gallery is located at 55-3435 Akoni Pule Highway and open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
