Bills acquire Jackson, release Young

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — The Buffalo Bills have a new backup in Tarvaris Jackson, and they’ve cut Vince Young in a sudden shuffle of quarterbacks on Monday.

Shortly after announcing they had released Young, the Bills followed up to confirm reports that they had acquired Jackson in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for an undisclosed draft pick.

Vick back at practice, ‘close to 100 percent’

PHILADELPHIA — Michael Vick will take his next snap in the season opener for the Philadelphia Eagles. Who replaces him if he gets hurt again remains a question.

Vick is back at practice after leaving last Monday’s game with injured ribs. He didn’t play in Friday’s game at Cleveland, but returned to the field Sunday night for Philadelphia’s annual practice party at Lincoln Financial Field.

“I think he’s real close to 100 percent,” offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said Monday.

Red Sox DH Ortiz goes back on 15-day DL

BOSTON — David Ortiz doesn’t want his season — and possibly his Red Sox career — to end on the disabled list.

The Red Sox placed Ortiz back on the 15-day disabled list Monday due to lingering problems with a strained right Achilles, but the DH said he hopes to play again this season.

Tulane leaves campus, NSU suspends practice

NEW ORLEANS — With tropical weather approaching southeast Louisiana, the Tulane football team has headed to Birmingham, Ala., where it plans to practice at least through Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Nicholls State has suspended operations through Wednesday, losing several days of practice before its season opener at Oregon State this Saturday.
