Police arrested 28 drivers for suspected drunken driving between Aug. 20 and Sunday; eight were involved in traffic accidents and one was younger than 21.

Police arrested 28 drivers for suspected drunken driving between Aug. 20 and Sunday; eight were involved in traffic accidents and one was younger than 21.

Police have made 912 suspected DUI arrests this year compared with 940 during the same period in 2011, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

South Hilo officers arrested 11 motorists, Kona officers nine, South Kohala officers four and Puna officers two, according to police. Ka’u and North Kohala officers arrested one driver in each district.

There have been 944 major accidents this year compared with 901 during the same period last year.

To date, there have been 24 traffic fatalities on Big Island public roadways, compared with 15 fatalities during the same period in 2011, according to police. To date, five of those fatalities were related to drugs, two to alcohol and six to a combination of alcohol and drugs.
