On Sunday, Frozen Pea Productions hosted the Brown Bear Bash and Sunny Sprint, a 1/3-mile swim followed by a 3.1-mile run. It was a fun time for everyone who came out to cheer or participate.
The morning was beautiful — the sun was warm and bright, and the water was crystal clear. With the words, “Ready, set, go,” the pea-ticipants were off splashing through the water.
After completing the 1/3-mile swim, the competitors either tagged their relay partner(s) or performed a lightning-fast transition to set out on the 3.1-mile run course.
From Kailua Pier, the athletes ran along Alii Drive to the turnaround at the Aloha Nail Company before heading back to the finish line at the pier.
Luis De La Torre placed first overall, finishing the race in 24 minutes, 55 seconds. Marius Ackler was right at his heels to claim second with a time of 25:01. Vaclav Seifert rounded out the top three with a time of 27:50.
Rebecca McKee claimed the title for the women, finishing ninth overall at 30:33.
Alexandra Herd took second (32:27), while Tessa and April Peerless tied for third at 34:51.
For the Split Peas, the team of Michael DeCarli and Doug Leopold sprinted to a first-place finish with a combined time of 29:58. The team of Batman and Orestes Barrios placed second with a time of 33:00, while Jim and Maggie McCleery took third (34:00).
Bragging rights for the Pea-wee title go Kaiden Lieto, who completed the keiki course — a swim to the third buoy followed by a one-mile run — in 11:30. Right behind Lieto, Lani Kamler took second with a time of 11:49, and Kanaipono Eckart claimed third (11:51).
In the Pea-wee Split Pea division, the team of Lainey and Tennile Eckart finished first with a combined time of 14:24. Second place went to Superman/Riley Blaber (14:38), and third went to Batman/Mike Schiff (14:39).
Congratulations to all who competed in this month’s Peaman race.
The rest of August is a quiet one for athletes, but the 16th annual Run For Hope is coming up on Sept. 9. The race, which has five- and 10-kilometer courses, will take place at 7 a.m. at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai. There is an entry fee — or, rather, a donation — for this race.
The next Frozen Pea Productions race, the Wee and DLT Whirled Peas Biathlon, will also take place on Sept. 9. This race includes a 3/4-mile swim in Kailua Bay and a 3.9-mile run along Alii Drive. The race starts at 8:03 a.m. near Kailua Pier and is open to all.
