Police suspect more than one person is responsible for a recent uptick in burglaries and car break-ins in the Waikoloa area.
South Kohala Police Capt. Aimee Wana on Wednesday said police are investigating at least 10 residential burglaries and several car break-ins since Aug. 10 in Waikoloa. The area, located off Waikoloa Road, normally sees just four reported burglaries and a handful of car break-ins during an average month.
While no one is in custody, police have identified at least one person who may be responsible for the crimes, Wana said. Police further believe there may be more suspects involved and are asking the public to be vigilant and immediately report any suspicious behavior in the area to police.
“The community will make this a safer place. They need to help out, step out and be vigilant,” Wana said, noting that to make a good report witnesses should get the best possible description of the person, vehicle and any other identifying information. “Be a good witness, but don’t approach them — police will help.”
Both the burglaries and break-ins appear to be opportunity-fueled, she said. In many cases, items were left in plain sight or doors were left unlocked.
To help residents protect themselves from crime, Wana said the department continues to offer home security checks to provide residents with information on what they can do to prevent crime at their homes.
To request a home security check, call the community policing office at 326-4646, ext. 259, in West Hawaii or 961-2350 in East Hawaii.
Anyone who witnesses any criminal activity in the area, particularly burglary or car break-in, is asked to immediately call 911. If a person notices a crime has occurred but no one is there, they should call the department’s nonemergency line at 935-3311.
Those with information but who want to remain anonymous should call Crime Stoppers at 329-8181 in Kona or 961-8300 in Hilo. All Crime Stoppers information is kept confidential.
