James “Jim” Lee Ater, 83, of Hilo, died Aug. 16 at Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home. Born Feb. 15, 1929, in Oberlin, Kan., he was a retired marine electrician for Kem, Inc. on Oahu, U.S. Navy Korean Conflict veteran and member of AFL-CIO IBEW Local Union 1186 and the NEBF.
Private services were held.
He is survived by wife, Judith Ater, of Hilo; daughters, Jamie Ater, of Honolulu, Jessica (Duane) Vargas, of Hilo; sons, Mark (Anna) Ater, of Hilo, Thomas (Genevieve) Teixeira, of Waimanalo, Oahu; sisters, Joanne (Walt) Castle, of Oberlin, Kan., Jackie (Larry) Rathbun, of McCook, Neb.a; five granddaughters; five great-grandchildren; one aunt; one cousin; numerous nieces and nephews.
