CHICAGO — New York Yankees ace CC Sabathia threw 38 pitches in a bullpen session and said he expects to return to the rotation Friday against the Cleveland Indians.

Manager Joe Girardi was encouraged Tuesday but said he wants to see how Sabathia feels today before giving the OK.

Toronto 3B Lawrie’s rehab shut down
after soreness

DETROIT — Toronto third baseman Brett Lawrie stopped his rehab for a right oblique injury after feeling sore when he woke up Tuesday.

Manager John Farrell said Lawrie isn’t yet to a point where he might need to be shut down for the season. Lawrie is hitting .282 with nine home runs, but has been on the disabled list since Aug. 4.

Cardinals’ Westbrook gets new contract

ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Cardinals agreed to a one-year contract with pitcher Jake Westbrook with a mutual option for 2014.

The 34-year-old Westbrook is 12-9 with a 3.50 ERA in 24 starts this season, leaving him three shy of 100 career victories. The sinkerballer leads the National League with 22 double plays induced and is also the best in the league at getting ground balls at 73 percent.

Fister uncertain
for Tigers with
groin tightness

DETROIT — Detroit right-hander Doug Fister has been experiencing tightness in his right groin and is not sure if he’ll make his next start.

Fister is 7-8 with a 3.67 ERA this year, and he already missed time around the beginning of the season with a side strain.

Rays activate
Scott from DL

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. —The Tampa Bay Rays have activated designated hitter Luke Scott from the 15-day disabled list and optioned infielder Sean Rodriguez to Triple-A Durham.

The moves were announced before the Rays played Kansas City on Tuesday night.

Scott missed 28 games because of a strained right oblique. He was in Tuesday’s lineup as the DH.

White Sox put De Aza on DL, bring up Danks

CHICAGO — The Chicago White Sox placed outfielder and leadoff hitter Alejandro De Aza on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with bruised left ribs and recalled outfielder Jordan Danks from Triple-A Charlotte.

De Aza is hitting .281 with six home runs, 44 RBIs and 21 stolen bases in 111 games this season.

Danks batted .265 with one homer and three RBIs in 29 games with the White Sox from June 7 to Aug. 12 before being optioned to Charlotte.

Sprinter Gatlin ends season due to illness

LAUSANNE, Switzerland — Organizers of the Lausanne Diamond League meeting say American sprinter Justin Gatlin will miss the rest of the season because of an illness.

Gatlin, the 100-meter bronze medalist at the London Olympics, was slated to run in the Athletissima meet in Switzerland on Thursday.
