Police arrested 38 drivers for suspected drunken driving between Aug. 13 and Sunday; nine were involved in traffic accidents and three were younger than 21.

Police arrested 38 drivers for suspected drunken driving between Aug. 13 and Sunday; nine were involved in traffic accidents and three were younger than 21.

Police have made 884 suspected DUI arrests this year compared with 904 during the same period in 2011, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

South Hilo officers arrested 18 motorists, Kona officers a dozen and Puna officers three, according to police. South Kohala and Hamakua officers arrested two drivers in each district while North Kohala officers arrested one.

There have been 923 major accidents this year compared with 869 during the same period last year.

To date, there have been 24 traffic fatalities on Big Island public roadways, compared with 15 fatalities during the same period in 2011, according to police. To date, five of those fatalities were related to drugs, one to alcohol and six to a combination of alcohol and drugs.
